This much-linked and well-written piece by Paul Begala deserves reading, and quoting:
Such is the hatred of the far right at the dawn of the 21st Century. And my how the optical worm has turned. Today it is the left invoking faith, flag and family, while the right destroys crosses. Today it is the left that honors the war dead, raises up a Gold Star Mother and publicly prays for our troops, while the right viciously attacks a woman who gave her country everything. Today it is the left that patiently and peacefully respects the Office of the Presidency, while the right diminishes the office by claiming it’s more important for the President to go bike-riding with a sports hero than comfort the mother of a war hero.
For the last two presidential elections it has been the Democratic Party whose nominee was a Vietnam War veteran, while the Republicans have sputtered out spurious defenses of their candidate’s deceitful draft-dodging.
On Thursday, Dick Cheney, who said he had “other priorities” in the Vietnam era, and so helped himself to five draft deferments, will address the 73rd Convention of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. I do not think he will express remorse for the callousness with which he explained his cowardice. Nor do I expect him to apologize for the shocking, mocking Republicans who, at their New York Convention a year ago, sported Band-Aids with tiny purple hearts to mock the blood shed by John Kerry and so many other heroes in that misbegotten war.
No, Mr. Cheney, surrounded by body guards who would gladly give their life for him, will no doubt wrap himself in the flag. A flag Larry Chad Northern wrapped around his axle on Prairie Chapel Road.
Larry Northern didn’t come driving out of nowhere.
We’re going to keep building the party until we’re hunting Democrats with dogs.

Chelsea is a Clinton. She bears the taint; and though not prosecutable in law, in custom and nature the taint cannot be ignored. All the great despotisms of the past - I’m not arguing for despotism as a principle, but they sure knew how to deal with potential trouble - recognized that the families of objectionable citizens were a continuing threat. In Stalin’s penal code it was a crime to be the wife or child of an ‘enemy of the people.’ The Nazis used the same principle, which they called Sippenhaft, ‘clan liability.’ In Imperial China, enemies of the state were punished ‘to the ninth degree’: that is, everyone in the offender’s own generation would be killed and everyone related via four generations up, to the great-great-grandparents, and four generations down, to the great-great-grandchildren, would also be killed.
John Derbyshire

The middle part of the country–the great red zone that voted for Bush–is clearly ready for war. The decadent left in its enclaves on the coasts is not dead–and may well mount a fifth column.

Why are we sending aircraft carriers halfway around the world to look for enemies, when our nation’s worst enemies–communists proclaiming an anti-American jihad–will be right there in front of the Washington Monument on Saturday?

I have known some of the liberal world quite well and for a long time, and there are quite obviously people close to the leadership of today’s Democratic Party who do not at all hope that the battle goes well in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Bush hatred has become a defining characteristic for many liberals—so much so that they appear to identify with it more surely and swiftly than they do their American citizenship. At times, some extremist liberals seem to be rooting against their fellow Americans and in favor of those who would kill us.

Let me put this in fairly simple terms: Al Jazeera now broadcasts to the region the words of Senator Durbin, certainly putting America’s men and women in uniform in greater danger. No more needs to be said about the motives of liberals.
Karl Rove
6/22/2005
Everybody got it? Dissent, fine; undermining, you’re a traitor. Got it? So, all those clowns over at the liberal radio network, we could incarcerate them immediately. Will you have that done, please? Send over the FBI and just put them in chains, because they, you know, they’re undermining everything and they don’t care, couldn’t care less.
Bill O’Reilly
6/20/2005
While our men and women in uniform put their lives on the line each day to defend our safety and to protect our freedoms, I am sure the least they expect is the backing and the support of their leaders at home. To the contrary, what we’ve seen from Democrat leaders is a growing pattern of jumping at any chance to point the finger at our own troops, bending over backwards to promote the interests of terror-camp detainees while dragging our military’s honored reputation through the mud.
Rep. Deborah Pryce (R-OH)
6/23/2005
[It] is just inconceivable and truly incorrigible that in the midst of the war, that the Democratic leaders would be conducting guerrilla warfare on American troops. … [The Pelosi/Waxman proposal for an independent commission to investigate conditions at Guantanamo Bay is] simply another example of some Democrat leaders trusting the words of terrorists over the proven decency of U.S. troops.
Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC)
6/23/2005
The Democratic leadership priority is to actively engage in the politics of division and distraction that can undermine our national security in favor of a left-wing agenda.

Wouldn’t it be great if anybody who speaks out against this country, to kick them out of the country? Anybody that threatens this country, kick ‘em out. We’d get rid of Michael Moore, we’d get rid of half the Democratic Party if we would just import that law. That would be fabulous. The Supreme Court ought to look into this. Absolutely brilliant idea out there.

Some liberal might premptively strike the people on this list, thinking they’re seriously declaring war on liberals.
That would be evil.

These people really do fetishize violence as a token of moral toughness, and they really are going to act out as their golden boy’s hold on power slips. I always talk around here about street fighting, and people rightly call me crazy. But think about how gratifying it would be to actually fight it out with these people. Violence really is the only thing they understand, and they’ll most certainly win any armed struggle. But it’s a better way to go than in a boxcar. These people are capable of anything, on any scale, from lone nuts to mobs to militias.
August 19th, 2005 at 11:26 am
You know, I had this crazy idea in my head that the nation was pretty much unified for a little while after 9/11. I was fucking wrong about that, wasn’t I?

You gotta stop yelling theatre! in the middle of crowded fires
August 19th, 2005 at 11:56 am
Steve pretty much, yeah. To be honest I was there with you, but the idea that America, let alone a Republican administration, was united in support of NEW YORKERS?
I know, right?
But there were those two days of Rudy where, yeah, right? Our cities, our polycultural non-theist heterogeneity, our embedded enlightenment-ness really seemed like a national identity all of us, together, could get behind.

These people may have been born here, but they are not any part of a decent, open, and free society. They are as foreign to the ideals of this nation’s founders as a tribe of Neanderthals swinging clubs and grunting.
Plus, they have no sense of humor, which is not only extremely unatractive, but is also likely the root of all their behavioral problems.

France has regional accents. Germany has regional accents. Texas has a population of 30,000 and they’re all exactly the same, praise God. At one point during the Cold War, a pretty fat eighth of the Directorate of Operations’ officers were from Texas, and they made the most of it. Once people decide you’re stupid, obvious and drunk, they’re dog meat. Many a Stan and Ollie team ran agents overseas this way, but because Marie’s Marauders were terrified they’d find a mole if they cleaned house, not a whole lot of Alamo-level glory was generated as a result. Thanks a fucking million, counter-intel retards. Forget Texas for two seconds — what is it with Virginia, anyway? Arlington running out of space? Franchise! Slogan: “Confiscated, renovated, inhume-ated! Hoo-ah!”
Two seconds over. Every time a media person says “Crawford” another drawling Baptist spy gets his little angel wings, so there’s an upside. America needs oil, and keeping track of Texans like a cat counts her kittens is a fence America’s enemies will have to whitewash again and again for the rest of The Readers’ natural lives. Excelsior!
And so many Texans really are stupid rich clowns, just as many Jews could give a shit about Israel and many Muslims are bored to tears with everything Muslim and would gladly press a button and exterminate any nation in the world if it meant never having to talk about being a fucking Muslim again.
Bushco attacks what it fears most and then stands over its kill and glares at its enemies. In theory. Fannistan is pumping out heroin at full military power (”thanks,” says Europe) but after that, the list of kills tapers off with unsettling abruptness. The second chick voted off the island on the lost season of Survivor, “Cindy,” whose son was killed in Iraq, isn’t much to carpet-bomb or rain fire on, so Bushco got some asshole to run over some cheap lath crosses lined up just so. Slap my ‘fro. These amateur dickheads openly employ mercenaries in a combat zone, you know. But all 29,999 of Texas’ other residents always knew Mr. Cross-Crusher was kind of nutty, and once Shotty “Shotgun” (who would never fire into a nightclub parking lot) McNot-Marine went off his rails, well, the whole village kinda went crazy. So it goes.
Bet you a dollar to a doughnut that someone from Texas does something really absurd before the end of August. Not the Undisclosed Coast losing power for a day because the grid is failing ungracefully, or British Petroleum blowing itself up twice in a fortnight in Houston, kindly stay indoors and hold your breath. But nutty. I’m thinking 30-round-magazine nutty, with an extra helping of Internet activity and not even a trace of active duty in Iraq to be found among his pockets full of identification, confessions and unmailed letters. Lefty Pulloutberg has a heck of an elaborate handloading setup in his concrete-reinforced barn, they say. I reckon there ought to be a law.

What the fuck was he talking about?
August 19th, 2005 at 6:51 pm
He was saying the argument that the US “deserved” 9/11 (for American imperialism, etc) is equivalent to the argument that a woman “deserved” to be raped because she wore a short skirt.
August 19th, 2005 at 6:58 pm
Ah, yes.
Odd that Alter would think that only a handful of crackpots are against blaming rape victims.

The interesting question is what these people do when there’s another Democrat in the White House — it will happen, in our lifetimes even — and they really have someone to hate. Not to mention when their ranks are filled with bitter Iraq vets. Somewhere, Timothy McVeigh is smiling.

People, please. The civil war isn’t coming. Don’t stock up on ammo.
I’d not be surprised if we’ll see a McVeigh or two, and the usual suspects saying how it’s a terrible thing, but one must understand the root causes of the rage which triggered it; i.e. Michael Moore’s large prosterior. Guns and paranoia will be the opposite of helpful.
August 19th, 2005 at 10:57 pm
Well, I agree. If you looka t the whole history of revolutions and civil wars (not counting anti-colonial struggles, which are obviosuly not relevant to the US)the Left has always come to power constitutionally; violence has always been initiated by the Right. France, the Civil War here, Russia (yes, Russia), Spain, Chile, etc. Our side’s comparative advantage is in political power, not firearms.

August 20th, 2005 at 1:18 am
The great thing about the Liberal Horde, as opposed to say the Tutsis or the Jews, is that (a) you can’t tell them apart from normal people and (b) they live everywhere, side-by-side, with regular folks. They’re like the fucking Canadians (of which I am one, but ssshhh don’t tell anyone). With a Jew or a Tutsi one has at least secondary racial characteristics that can be used to identify some of them; with Liberals there’s…what? A willingness to help others? That could be just a pussy Christian. A surfeit of Chardonnay? How does one tell a Liberal from a regular person on the street?
As a result, one can prattle on and on about one’s genocidal impulses, the urge to ship them abroad, the desire to see them muzzled, etc., and yet not be in a position to do anything about it. It keeps the base riled up without actually leading to anything except random and stupid violence of the sort Mike D. (loved Ill Communication!) was talking about. So you get guys who drive their pickups across military cemeteries because it might upset the Liberals, never suspecting they look like idiots to all the regular folks too.
And so, much like abortion, which will never be illegal as long as Republicans are in power because then they’d lose their great vote-getter, and which is in danger from Democrats who think they can peel some off for themselves, Liberal-hating is just a lot of gas.
So the solution, the preventative medicine, is constant, unending ridicule. Make fun of Malkin’s bug-eyed outrage. Point out that Limbaugh is fat. Seriously - I’m not fond of the term “chimpy” to refer to the President - s’not Canadian really to do the childish name-calling thing - but a good portion of this country seems to think the future is really a matter of choosing between chimpy and the flip-flopper.
August 20th, 2005 at 2:21 am
So apparently the RW’s think they own Jesus along with the country,I find it almost funny that MAF mothers would find it so offensive that they’re desd children’s names be put on a cross that they condone mowing down those crosses.

Will someone, somewhere, PLEASE get it through the thick skulls of all concerned that the Bush clan are NOT Texans? They’re Kennebunkport’s problem, not just ours. If Georgie I hadn’t pissed off Daddy Prescott by marrying a woman he couldn’t stand, we might have been spared the whole insipid bunch.
Texas is not unilaterally a bunch of yahoos, and jackasses are everywhere. Long time Texans tend to tolerate assholes because most of the carpetbaggers ARE assholes. Some convert, some don’t. We’ve got our homegromn ones as well, but by damn, the Bush alegiance to Texas is a trumped up excuse to make that little shit look downhome and folksy. He didn’t sound like a Texan until it was politically expedient. Of course, most of the times I spoke to him, it was in the context of getting his drunken, drugged ass out of the way after yet another party at a country club in the 70’s. You know, when he was supposed to be flying the next day.

This sounds like voices from a country on the brink of civil war.
France’s Fourth Republic didn’t survive Algeria, and I don’t expect our Second (i.e. post Civil-War) Republic to survive, either.
I remember a lot of cheap talk during the 2000 recount that the Republicans deserved to win the White House because they were men enough to take any steps necessary to take it. “Democracy is for pussies” is the way that one of my interlocutors put it.
Probably sounded better in German…..

Tired of Shit Texan:
I feel your pain. It’s the same here in California. All your serial killers? Mostly from flyover country (see: James Oliver Huberty, the nutjob who killed all those people at the San Ysidro McDonald’s a few days before the 1984 Olympics; he was from Ohio).
As Hunter S. Thompson wrote (I paraphrase): California is the end of the line. When somebody has fucked up in their shithole little town in the east or midwest, he can’t run any further than California.
A classic example is the Dodgers pitcher Derek Lowe. A hero in Boston last year, married with kids. He moves to Los Angeles for the money and he’s now left his wife and kids and taken up with a Fox Sports Net reporter.
I’m really tired of Least Coasters and Flyover Folks using California as a place to go to instead of therapy.

I disagree. buy some guns and ammo. The extremist right assumes that you will not defend yourself when attacked, and that makes you a wounded fish in the shark tank. Right wing violence is constantly being fomented in the media by O’Reilly and his ilk. Would the Jews have been sent to the camps if they had shot some brownshirts on Kristallnacht?

In the ’30s the civilized world had Churchill at Chartwell warning us about the totalitarian threat in Germany. Who’s warning Europe about the totalitarian threat here? Because soon enough they’ll have to throw in their lot with Russia’s rusty nukes and China’s homebound army to stop what used to be us.
With luck they can beat us with a financial shot across the bow, like we did in the Suez crisis. That would hold us off, for a while. But without a bill of rights or electoral accountability Christ’s crackers will be back, again and again, until foreign forces destroy this country and remake it.
Meantime, cache those arms.

Anyway, now I have this handy-dandy list from which to cull retorts in future battles!

For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind.
Hosea 8:7
A new civil war, actually more of a civil war/revolution hybrid, is inevitable due to a confluence of trends culminating in a perfect storm. Cointellpro hacks and Echelon spiderbots: clearly understand this, I am neither calling for it, nor do I advocate violence (in spite of the horrific violence that undergirds the history and contemporary reality of Amerikkkan state power). Indeed, in the course of the coming turmoil, many people who don’t deserve to will suffer - although of course many people who deserve to meet justice will instead grow rich in safety. And the end result is likely to be the replacement of one set of corrupt elites with another, as has happened with every revolution - sorry doctrainaire revolutionary socialists (and shallow enthusiasts of the American revolution). Nevertheless, when one studies the assembled evidence from an intellectually honest, historical materialist point of view, it seems to be coming soon, sure as the sun sets each day.
The biggest reason why is probably because the “right” (what do labels really mean - virtually nothing at this point, with both parties clamoring to execute the wishes of the same military-industrial complex Board of Directors, fused together in perpetual wargasm), as it clawed its way back to power since Watergate (in what, tactically, was truly a masterful long march through the institutions), focused their pitch to the fuck-kill-eat lizard brain part of the brain. Actually, not even the brain - in human beings, rather, it is the brain stem. This meant the use of image and sound bites appealing to emotion over critical reason, in fact suffocating critical reason, a course of action made decidely easier by the rise of a virulently anti-science/anti-reason, reactionary, jingoistic, bible-thumping evangelical fundamentalist christianity (who know nothing whatsoever of Jesus’ message as the prince of peace) as the handmaiden to “right-wing” power and the wholesale collapse of public education, which has raised two generations of selfish, consumerist, know-nothing zombies.
In cultivating this obese, brain-dead horde of sheeple clamoring to trade the achingly beautiful evolutionary miracle of reason and consciousness for blind submission to authoritarian reactionaries, the scumfucking “leaders” were especially fond of “fetishizing violence as a token of moral toughness” (nice wording, posted by Lemon Merengue at Poor Man). The phrases below are merely a few of the choicest morsels in this gluttonous bloodfeast of hate.
Unfortunately, the unstoppable force of a vast pool of willfully ignorant morons slavishly devoted to authority figures who eat their substance while peddling them filthy hateful lies, who have a bottomless capacity for self-delusion and cognitive dissonance (which by all laws of physics should have already made their heads explode long ago) are about to be confronted by the immovable object of Reality: Amerikkka’s full-blown, permanent economic collapse, possibly intensified by the effects of 50% of Americans finally (with soul-numbingly painful slowness) realizing that Amerikkka’s military imperialism is anti-future, anti-human and anti-planet (to say nothing of financially unaffordable) and perhaps the karmic hammer of Peak Oil dropping down (although more on my agnoticism regarding Peak Oil later).
In other words, when the shit hits the fan, the knuckle-dragging dittoheads, freepers and other assorted holy rollers are going to blame anyone their vaunted “leaders” tell them to blame as long as it helps prevent them from blaming themselves, their venal RepubliCrat war pig politicians, 115 years of raw military imperialism, and the karmic baggage associated with being a nation built on genocide, land theft, and slavery of a scale never seen before in human history. When the unwelcome effects of Reality begin to intrude on their beloved Freedom - which is nothing more or less than the “freedom” to watch cable TV, drink beer, shop at Wal Mart and worship celebrities in an undisturbed solipsistic haze while the rich and powerful that they adore so much lie to, murder and steal from them - they are basically going to flip out and engage in the violence for which they have been primed for so long.
While this may give them some of the first exercise they have experienced since high school, it won’t be healthy. Running down crosses at Camp Casey is just one of the opening shots.

They can rant and they can rave, but the simple truth is when they got their war — they turned their backs on it. These folks support the war — as long as someone else fights it for ‘em. Ask any military recruiter.
P.S.
How come some many of you lack the courage to use your names — are you closet republicans?

Now, we know just one of the reasons that
bill oreilly and rush limbaugh are losing
listeners…and watchers I understand that
the o’reilly show has lost about half a million
watchers since his little run in with the office
abuse situation that cost Fox about 7 million,
and bill made fun of Clinton…his payment was
a fraction of that…and of course Limbaugh
will meet his connection on the Dennys lot
tonight….lets watch!! HEE HEE

Stonefruit is absolutely correct about the collapse.
Pacifism in the face of violence unleashed might score a few points in the Akashic records but won’t keep your family and you alive.
I never understood the left’s distance from weaponry.
The collapse IS coming, whether slo-mo or another phoney fireworks display or when the rest of the world pulls the plug.
Purchase, learn, practice, survive.

Stonefruit should put those words in stone, so nobody can say that no one saw it coming. I say the right is full of chickenhawk pussies, if their words of violence were answered with the real thing, you would see a few true patriots doing what they saw as right. They would be standing in the vapor left by the loudmouth shit stirrers, who would be hiding. The bushes and cheneys of America would all break out in assholes and shit themselves to death, when confronted with the consequences of their stupidity and avarice.

thanks for assembling that horrifying collection of vitriol… you’re right, there is certainly the possibility of much worse… browsing the blogs, i am both astonished and profoundly saddened to see how much the wwe/testosterone school of “kick their asses” and “bomb them into the stone age” (insert your own identifier for “their” and “them”) has taken hold and now predominates the discourse of the right… we are in some hard times…

A note about post No. 29. The Tutsi and Hutu are NOT genetically distinguishable ethnic groups. The Hutu and Tutsi “racial identitites” were established by Belgian occupatiers in the 19th and early 20th century. They invented a tribal caste system so that the collaborator tribe could help them impose their will on the slave tribe. When the genocide started, the differences between Hutu and Tutsi were as ethnically artificial as those between Republicans, Democrats or Reformers.
I would not underestimate the potential of political hatred to devolve into acts of murder.

An interesting range of ideas. but be clear about one thing, if violence starts, do not hesitate, negotiate, or waver.
Stonefruit has captured my frustration with the current situation. THe majority of the ‘citizenry’ could be characterized as slackjawed, mouthbreathing, barely upright neanderthals.
What makes us any different from other ethnic/political/religous conflicts going on around the world? I am not smart enough to answer that question but I realize a threat when I hear one. These people are out for blood. They believe they can cow the opposition with just barely concealed threats and we will piss ourselves and beg for mercy.
FUCK THAT! I am too old to put up with this mad shit. THEY want a fight, I’m not hiding, I’m not running, I’m gonna be right out where they can find me.
But at least I will die for what I believe, and on my feet.

Apparently the idea of a civil society in this country no longer exists. Yes the right wing Republicans are a bunch of crackpots. Yes they falsely claim to be the party “strong on defense” even though they have cut and run from every conflict in the past 55 years. Check it out The battles that ended without complete victory: Korea, Vietnam, Lebanon, Iraq 1, all ended with a Republican President pulling out the troops, before our mission was complete. Yes these wimps have no stomach for a real war. Every rational person knows that. Liberal Democrats on the other hand seem to have no willingness to talk about standing up for working people or proposing improvements to our society either. For the most part they would rather whine about the party in power. Even though they didn’t get a whole lot done during their last few years in control. I must also comment on the high volume of potty mouth on this board. Learn how to use adjectives and adverbs that mean something.
Instead of crying about what Limbaugh says (and a lot of you must listen to him) consign him to the garbage bin. Get out and do something to make the country, the city or the community you live in a little better. Building a movement of civilized people who are not wedded to some nut-job ideology is the way to trivialize those few who are.

Liberals first of all are morons…..Where the hell would this country be if simple minded Kerry was elected into office? Shaking hands with the enemy and at the same time have them trying to kill us? Bush may not be perfect, but he’s our president and god dammit stand by him!
January 8th, 2006 at 2:17 am
I agree with Rhinosauras - Thank god Kerry was not elected. Bush is bad enough but Kerry would have been a step too far for me. We should stand by Bush until someone better comes along, hopefully that wont be too far away.

riiiiight. um, stand by george, who so far has completely destroyed everything he’s ever touched.
katrina, torturing, spying, rendition, murdering, lying, stupidity, war profiteering, outing wmd cia agents, botching *every* terror investigation (padilla?, boston blowtorch jihad?), ignoring the UN, generally being an asshole.
why would we stand by bush again?
stand by Bush until someone better comes along. you are a fucking TOOL.

Shaking hands with the enemy and at the same time have them trying to kill us?
You mean like someone whose first oil compnay was financed by Salem bin Laden, and has done business with the bin Laden family for decades? Who expedited their flight from the US in the days after 9/11 when Americans were grounded, shielding them from FBI questioning?
The Bush who held hands with Saudi princes in Crawford?
Your craving for an authoritarian strongman daddy-figure has made you desperate and stupid, mouth-breather.

A word on comment #40 and the idea behind it (perhaps a bit late, but I hate this kind of crap).
“Would the Jews have been sent to the camps if they had shot some brownshirts on Kristallnacht?”
Yes.
Kristallnacht is a good mark for the beginning of the Holocaust _not_ only because of the riot that night, but because of the state reaction to those events. There was state oppression of the Jews before that night, and the riot itself was fomented by Goebbel’s writings and brownshirt instigation. But in the days following, Goering’s tactic of blaming all of the violence on the Jews enabled him to place incredible pressure upon them. It is only after that night that we see most of the assets transferred to the state, or that we see mass forced labor. Organized resistance that night by a group of Jews would have made Goering’s task that much easier.
So, in short, stockpiling ammo is unnecessary and would not help you were we to have our own Kristallnacht. Who would the brownshirts be anyway? College republicans?
The people quoted above are nutjobs. Calm the **** down or you may end up like them.
