Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2003
were presented on February 29, 2004, at the Kodak Theatre
at Hollywood & Highland®.
The earlier February date for the 76th Annual Academy Awards
moved the show to California's rainiest month. And sure enough,
it rained before and after the show, leaving a perfect two
days on Saturday and Sunday for Oscar to slip between the
raindrops and for the glitterati to sashay down the red carpet
dry and relatively warm.
With red carpet glamour back and a shorter Awards season,
interest in the show seemed especially high and the ratings
popped back up, with the telecast attracting its largest audience
since 2000 - 43.5 million viewers.
The King ruled, as "The Lord of the Rings: The Return
of the King" took the Oscar in each category in which
it had been nominated, eleven of them in total, thereby joining
"Ben Hur" and "Titanic" with the most
Oscars in the record books.
