Mr. Sunshine Potholder
Finished size: approx. 8 inches wide by 7 inches
Materials: Thick cotton worsted weight yarn,
about 2 ounces 1 pr. U.S. # 9 needles, plus
crochet hook size "J"
Gauge: 4 sts and 7 rows equal 1 inch
Directions: (note: worked in garter stitch)
Starting at bottom of sun, cast on 16 sts. Row
1: Knitting across, knit into front and back
of first and last stitch of row. Row 2: K across.
Repeat rows 1 & 2 until 30 sts on needle.
Knit each row until about 5 inches from beg..
Start decrease: K 2 tog, k acorss to last 2
sts, k 2 tog.. K next row. Repeat these last
2 rows until 16 sts remain. Bind off.
"Outer Edge Sun Rays" With crochet
hook, make a chain about 60 inches long. Fasten
off. Pin into "loops" all around outside
edge of sun potholder. (about 23 or 24 loops)
Sew each loop in place. Remove pins.
Eyebrows: (make 2) with crochet hook, make a
chain about 2 inches long. Fasten off. Form
into upside down curve and sew in place near
top of sun head.
Eyeballs: (make 2) with crochet hook, make a
chain of 4 sts. Fasten off, Form into a circle.
Sew each eyeball under each eyebrow.
Mouth line: With crochet hook, make a chain
about 6 inches long. Fasten off. Sew into a
"U" shape at bottom center of potholder.
