News:  Judge Rules All Handhelds May Violate Patent   

A federal judge has ruled in favor of E-Pass Technologies that its patent covers more than just credit card-sized handhelds. This has opened the door for E-Pass to renew its lawsuit against Microsoft, Hewlett Packard, and Palm. The patent is for a "multifunction, credit card-sized computer that allows users to securely store a multitude of account numbers, PIN codes, access information and other data from multiple credit cards, check cards, identification cards and similar personal documents."

Tip #186: Fix for Downloading Free Microsoft eBooks    

Some users have reported that they can not locate their free eBooks after downloading them to their computer from the Microsoft Reader Web site. Microsoft has suggested the following fix for this problem.

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Folder Options.
  3. Click the File Types tab.
  4. Scroll down to and click the .lit extension.
  5. Click Advanced.
  6. Verify that Confirm Open After Download is selected.

If you are having any other type of problem in downloading the eBooks, consult the Help page on the Microsoft Reader Web site.

    Review:  Macromedia Flash Player 6 for the Pocket PC  

Macromedia has finally released the much anticipated Flash Player 6 for the Pocket PC. This release trails the release of the PC version of Flash 6 by almost a full year, and many users and developers have been eagerly awaiting it. For those of you who may not be familiar with Flash, it is Macromedia's player for delivering rich streaming content over low-bandwidth connections. The fact that Flash is designed to deliver a rich media environment while minimizing file size makes it a very useful development tool for the Pocket PC, and one that in my opinion is often underrated.
