New Fact Sheets Released: Insulin Resistance and Pre-Diabetes; Diabetes Prevention Program

The National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse has published two new fact sheets: Insulin Resistance and Pre-Diabetes and Diabetes Prevention Program. Both provide the latest information on strategies for preventing or delaying type 2 diabetes in those at risk.

The Insulin Resistance and Pre-Diabetes fact sheet explains the causes, symptoms, and diagnosis of insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and pre-diabetes. Readers can refer to a body mass index table to evaluate body weight relative to height. The fact sheet summarizes the results of the DPP and discusses strategies that can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.

The Diabetes Prevention Program fact sheet summarizes the findings of the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP); this major 3-year clinical trial showed that diet and exercise sharply reduced the chances that a person with impaired glucose tolerance would develop type 2 diabetes. The fact sheet defines type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes and also lists the risk factors for type 2 diabetes.

Printed copies of both fact sheets can be ordered by using our online catalog at www.catalog.niddk.nih.gov.
