At his installation as Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba, His Honour spoke about the special themes of his mandate. Of Manitoba's history, he said, "I hope that as Lieutenant Governor I will be able to encourage, in my own small way, a greater curiousity about our past, and in heightening awareness of it, contribute to an understanding of where we are and where we may be going as Manitobans." Of disorders of child development, he said, "..I propose to provide support to the children-and families of children-who are dealing with disorders of childhood development, particularly Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). ...I believe that no parent should feel alone in the struggle, that no teacher should feel overwhelmed in the classroom, and that no child should feel hopeless or be without some success."
