The 8-bed Intensive Observation Unit (IOU) at our Dixie Road site is one feature that sets us apart from many other CROs. The unit is fully equipped with 'state of the art' equipment and is designed for studies that require intensive observation and monitoring. Our procedure room is equipped for special procedures as listed below.

The unit is staffed by nurse-coordinators, who have many years experience in the critical care setting. The available medical staff includes Intensivists, Cardiologists and Respirologists.

Procedures that can be performed in the Intensive Observation Unit include

Accurate measuring on Input/Output and Weight
Intensive Cardiovascular, Respiratory and Oxygen Saturation monitoring
Invasive monitoring including Swan Ganz, and central venous pressure and arterial pressure monitoring
Echo-cardiography
Challenge procedures including methacholine, mediator and antigen
Bronchoscopy, bronchial biopsy
Pulmonary function testing
Endoscopy - upper and lower GI
EEG monitoring
Cognitive testing
Sleep studies
Ultrasound assessments
Oculo-visual assessments
We can also develop or adopt other special procedures that the protocol may require.
