3G phones strut their stuff at CeBIT 2006 - smaller and more capable than last year's news. We've spent time with the best of what Samsung, Nokia, Sony Ericsson and more have to offer. |
Nokia 6280
Albeit one of Nokia's largest handsets in recent months, the 6280 slider is also highly capable with a spacious, first-class display, a good keypad and the latest version of Nokia's Series 40 operating system - similar in appearance to the company's more advanced business phones. Speedy 3G connectvity and a high-quality 2 Megapixel camera allow for effortless video calling despite a less-than-minimalist user interface, but we're disappointed by the limited browser capabilities and mediocre music player. Samsung SGH-Z540
Combining a razor-sharp, large display with excellent ergonomics and a slim - yet somewhat tall - clamshell form factor, Samsung's SGH-Z540 focuses on delivering a 3G experience without the all-encompassing feature sets for which the company is known. Its camera and music player both rank as mediocre, but business users should find a capable alternative complete with Bluetooth for hooking ones laptop up to the Internet. More...
LG U8500
The successor to LG's popular U880, the U8500 is a slim 3G clamshell which remains nearly identical to its predecessor save for polished software and a slightly improved camera application. In short, this remains one of the market's better choices for a slim 3G phone, courtesy of its superbly compact form factor, good 3G performance, a first-rate display and an ergonomically superior keypad. Throw in a 1.3 Megapixel camera, video calling and microSD memory expansion, and you have a winner - which also happens to be in stores now.
Sony Ericsson K610i
Making a second stab at bringing 3G to the people (the first of which was represented by the K600i), Sony Ericsson's K610i is a small, sleek and impressively good-looking handset with an impeccable display, good ergonomics and a quality 2 Megapixel camera. Granted, its music player isn't much to write home about and a dedicated video call button is nowhere to be found, but the K610i nonetheless remains the best choice for those who want the benefits of 3G sans the frills and complimentary bulk. Motorola RAZR V3x
Every bit as thin as its predecessor, Motorola's RAZR V3x excels on hardware - but faces fierce competition where the original RAZR had nearly none. Its outstanding screen and compact form factor is hampered by the average performance of the 2 Megapixel camera, music player and numerical keypad, while its user interface is in dire need of a usability upgrade - particularly with regard to visual feedback and indicators.
