Sony Ericsson M600i communicator unveiled
By Jørgen Sundgot, Monday 6 February 2006  E-mail story  Print story

Hands-on experience

All dressed up in Apple white, the M600i doesn't look much like a business phone at first glance - but take a closer look, and its unusual thumbboard reveals a device primed for messaging on the go. Although difficult to get used to as two characters reside on each rocker key, it's a truly impressive business performer with its high-resolution touch screen; a raft of push e-mail software; extensive document management capabilities; and speedy performance. We can't say the inclusion of a handy scroll wheel and Memory Stick Micro expansion do anything to put us off this one, either.

Specifications

Measuring a mere 15 mm thick, Sony Ericsson today launched its second 3G-capable communicator in the M600i. Based on the same platform as that of the P990i unveiled last year, the M600i shares many of the features of its larger sibling including 3G and a high-resolution, touch-sensitive 2.6-inch display, as well as USB 2.0 with charging support and Bluetooth. The latter, however, has been improved to include support for the A2DP profile, which enables streaming of stereo audio.

The Bluetooth functionality of the M600i in turn ties in with its media capabilities, which include the playback of MP3 and AAC formats as well as video at 30 FPS. Another highlight of the device is its dual function thumbboard, which - much like that of Palm's Treo 700w - contains a numerical keypad with in its QWERTY layout, and is also enhanced by the presence of continuous spell checking and word completion. Other features related to input include a 3-way jog dial and handwriting recognition.

Furthermore, the M600i harbours 80 MB of on-board memory which can be further expanded by means of Memory Stick Micro cards. This, combined with the presence of 3G and tri-band GSM, will give future owners the ability to store vast quantities of documents in Office formats for which the M600i offers full support. Other applications present include Opera 8 for web browsing, RSS feed support, PC synchronization, an Adobe Acrobat viewer and VPN software.

Additionally, Sony Ericsson said it is working with a range of partners to enable support for a range of 3rd party groupware solutions, including AlteXia; iAnywhere OneBridge; Intellisync; Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync; RIM BlackBerry Connect; Seven; and Visto.

Availability

To be available in Granite Black and Crystal White editions, the Sony Ericsson M600i is slated to ship in Europe and the US in the second quarter of 2006 for an unknown price.
