Renesas Technology Releases R8J66730FP Liquid Crystal Panel Timing Controller Incorporating Overdrive Function for Improved Moving Image Display Capability and Color Conversion Function

Tokyo, September 12, 2005 −− Renesas Technology Corp. today announced the R8J66730FP timing controller for TFT color liquid crystal panels, incorporating overdrive and color conversion functions plus frame memory SDRAM in a single package. Sample shipments will begin on September 13, 2005 in Japan.

A timing controller is an LSI for generating liquid crystal panel display control signals. The R8J66730FP is Renesas Technology's first standard product, and offers the following features.

(1) Overdrive function and frame memory in a single package, enabling liquid crystal panel module power consumption and costs to be reduced
The R8J66730FP incorporates an overdrive function that improves the moving image display responsiveness of a liquid crystal panel, and also employs frame data compression technology (cFFD*1) that reduces the amount of frame memory used. While a conventional timing controller incorporating an overdrive function generally requires two frame memory SDRAMs, for example, for a WXGA+*2 resolution TV liquid crystal panel, the use of frame data compression technology enables the number of SDRAMs to be reduced to one. In addition, SiP (System in Package) technology has enabled the timing controller chip and SDRAM chip to be housed in a single package, reducing EMI noise and also lightening the user’s design load for the high-speed signal processing section. Use of the R8J66730FP cuts liquid crystal panel module power consumption and also enables three currently used components to be reduced to one, resulting in lower costs.
(2) Color conversion function enabling color display adjustment to suit the application
The R8J66730FP incorporates a Natural Color Matrix (NCM*3) color conversion function. This enables original liquid crystal panel colors to be converted to more vivid colors suited to TV viewing in TV panel applications, or to colors compliant with the sRGB*4 standard for faithful reproduction of original colors in PC panel applications, for example. This facility makes it possible to create LCD panels suited to a variety of uses.
(3) Support for a wide range of resolutions, from VGA*5 to WXGA+
The R8J66730FP supports a wide range of resolutions, from VGA to WXGA+, enabling it to be used in liquid crystal panels for various applications, such as liquid crystal TVs, PC monitors, and notebook PCs.

Demand for TFT liquid crystal panels continues to grow as they become increasingly widely used in TVs as well as PC monitors and notebook PCs. However, a concern with liquid crystal panels is how to improve moving image display capability, which still lags behind that of conventional CRTs (cathode ray tubes), one reason for this being the slower response speed of liquid crystal displays compared with CRTs. This situation has led many panel manufacturers to employ an overdrive function that improves liquid crystal responsiveness, but implementing an overdrive function requires frame memory that stores one screen's worth of moving image data, with SDRAM or the like being used for this purpose, and this gives rise to such problems as an increase in the number of component parts as well as increased EMI noise due to the handling of high-speed signals.

Also, the colors required of liquid crystal panels vary according to the application. For example, while more vivid colors are demanded for TV viewing, faithful representation of the original colors is required when displaying a list of products at a Web site on a personal computer. Moreover, with the recent increase in personal computers equipped with a TV function, there is also a growing need to be able to change the color display characteristics of a personal computer according to its use at a particular time.

In response to such market needs, Renesas Technology has developed the R8J66730FP timing controller designed to offer lower liquid crystal panel module power consumption and costs.

The R8J66730FP is a liquid crystal panel timing controller that incorporates an overdrive function providing improved moving image display responsiveness and a color conversion function, and supports a wide range of liquid crystal panel resolutions, from VGA to WXGA+.

An on-chip frame data compression function enables 1,366 x 768-pixel size WXGA+ panel frame memory requirements to be met by a single 16-Mbit SDRAM.  Moreover, the timing controller chip and 16-Mbit SDRAM chip are housed in a single package as an SiP, resulting in lower EMI noise than in a conventional timing controller equipped with an overdrive function and also enabling the usual three components of a conventional timing controller to be reduced to one, making it possible to reduce both the power consumption and cost of a liquid crystal panel module.

A color conversion function allows original liquid crystal panel colors to be adjusted to suit various uses, such as TV or PC use, enabling liquid crystal panels to be supported for wide range of applications.

LVDS *6 is supported as a moving image input interface for signal input from a TV moving image processing LSI or graphics controller, and low-amplitude differential signal transfer is performed as moving image data output to the liquid crystal driver. Support for 8-bit and 6-bit moving image data is provided for both input and output.

Liquid crystal driver control signals can be adjusted flexibly in line with liquid crystal driver and liquid crystal panel characteristics as data transition timing can be changed by rewriting register contents.

The package used is a 176-pin LQFP.

Renesas Technology will continue to extend its lineup of products in line with market needs through the development of R8J66730FP based products supporting higher-resolution liquid crystal panels.
