MySanAntonio.com FAQ's Registration FAQ's | Newsletter FAQ's

Why don't the pages fit on my screen?
If you're having problems viewing the MySanAntonio.com Web site with your current screen resolution (i.e. you must scroll left and right), please follow these instructions (for PC users)

1) Go to your Desktop
2) Right-click your mouse
3) Click on Properties
4) Click on the Settings tab
5) Go to "Desktop Area" and move the slide to at least 1024 x 768 pixels

We designed the site for a 1024 x 768 pixels screen based on the screen size of over 75% of MySanAntonio.com visitors. This is compatible with the standard most recent monitors have as the default setting.

NOTE: If you want to resize your screen and it will not let you, there could be a problem with your drivers. If you have the disk or CD with the proper drivers for your video card, insert it and install them. If not, go to the Web site of the manufacturer and download them.

Which browsers does MySanAntonio.com support?
MySanAntonio.com is designed and coded to support the following browsers:
· Internet Explorer 5.0 (and up)
· Netscape 7.0 (and up)
· AOL 8.0 (and up)
· WebTV*
· Opera 7.2

You may be able to view some site features if you have an earlier version of one of these browsers, however, the above browsers are recommended.

*WebTV is not compatible with the latest versions of RealAudio and Video.

How do I advertise on MySanAntonio.com? Visit http://www.mysanantonio.com/advertising/ for information or contact us directly at sales@mysanantonio.com.

When is Crimebase updated?
You can find Crimebase as a link from the left hand navigation on most pages or by using the keyword "Crimebase" on MySA Keyword search form. You can also access it directly at http://crimebase.mysanantonio.com.

Crimebase is updated weekly as we get information from the SAPD. There are two files for each report and they do not come in at the same time so we must wait to get both the summary and the full report before we can update the database. There is a delay from when a report is filed, when it is input and then sent to us. As quickly as we have all components we update Crimebase.

Why are some reports not listed in Crimebase?
We only receive reports filed by the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) so reports for zip codes not covered by the SAPD (outside San Antonio) or handled by another law enforcement agency (Bexar County Sheriff Department or Texas Department of Public Safety, etc.) will not appear in Crimbebase.

Crimebase is updated weekly as we get information from the SAPD. There are two files for each report and they do not come in at the same time so we must wait to get both the summary and the full report before we can update the database. There is a delay from when a report is filed by an officer, when it is input and then sent to us. As quickly as we have all components we update Crimebase.

Can the movie page font be adjusted? Our vendor for movie listings sets the display font for the page. Some are small in order to fit the page design but most are legible. However, they can be adjusted.

You may have your font size on your browser set at a small size. If you go to the top of your browser, under View, you will see an option called "Text size." This gives you the option to change the font to a larger size. That might be helpful.

You may also have your screen set at a smaller pixel width. If you go the start button and go to the control panel, you will see an icon called 'Display'. You can adjust your width there.

How can I find an obituary that has run in the past?
You can do a search for obituaries printed in the San Antonio Express-News starting on April 2001 from the Obituary section at http://obits.mysanantonio.com. If you need to find an obituary before that time, the Central Library at 600 Soledad St. has archives of the newspaper including the obituaries.

How Can I submit a club or organization?
To list a club or organization, send a press release to the S.A. Life editor Elaine Ayala or fax them to 210-250-3405.
Address press releases to:

S.A. Life editor
c/o San Antonio Express-News
P.O. Box 2171
San Antonio, Texas 78297-2171

We update the listings weekly as they are published in the San Antonio Express-News.

What’s the difference between a MySA Keyword and a Story Search?
Using the exact MySA keyword will take you directly to the section or page being promoted. Keywords can be entered in the MySA Keyword search box at the top right of the home page and most other pages on the site. If the keyword you enter is slightly different from the keyword assigned, you will get a “Search Results” page. This page will show you keywords with similar content as well as search the online story content for the presence of that word in headlines and stories.

The Story Search does not search classified ads, archives, videos or content from third-party sources. News stories are online for 10 days and columns are available for 30 days before being moved to the archives. The story search includes looking for a word or a phrase in the headline, byline (author) or body of the story.

How do I get permission to link to your site?
If you are simply linking to our site or to a portion of our site you don’t need permission. However, we do not permit framing our site and, due to copyright infringement policies, no content from MySanAntonio may be posted on another site or in another format without written permission.

Reproduction requests may be sent to the Express-News via kfoley@express-news.net. Reproduction requests may be sent to KENS 5 via asmith@kens5.com. Remember that if you link to a specific page on the site, stories are only available online for 10 days and columns are only available for 30 days.

Is the Alamo Cam out of focus?
The Alamo Cam is located in a shop window across from the Alamo. You are likely to see glare at dawn and dusk and very little detail after dark. The glare or low light from either of these situations prevents the camera from producing a clearer image.

The image from the Alamo Cam refreshes automatically, typically every 30 seconds, and requires that Java is enabled on the browser.

27. I requested a new password, but it was never sent to me. When you use the “forgot password?” feature, our system automatically generates a new, random password for you and sends it to the e-mail address you specified. Because this is an automated process, some e-mail providers view this as spam or junk mail. Some of the email providers we know classify these emails as spam or junk include: Earthlink/Mindspring, ChoiceMail, certain AOL accounts, and individual companies; but there are many others. If you requested a password and did not receive it, please check your ‘spam’ or ‘junk’ folders for an email from helpcenter@belointeractive.com. The subject line is ‘Your new password.’ If you do not find an email from us, please contact our customer service center at helpcenter@belointeractive.com, as the email may have been automatically deleted.

4. My e-mail browser doesn’t support graphically rich e-mail, like “HTML” e-mail. I can’t receive documents with photos, video or audio clips. Can you send me the newsletters in text-only format?
If your e-mail program does not allow you to view HTML e-mail, you can go to yahoo.com or hotmail.com and get a free e-mail account that does support graphically enhanced e-mail. You can then have your newsletters sent to that new e-mail address.

To change your email address, please visit the Member Center and select the “Modify My Account” link. From there, you will be presented with your account listing and have the ability to update your email address. Once you submit your changes, your new address will be saved immediately.

5. I accidentally deleted this week’s newsletter from my inbox before I had a chance to read it. Could you please resend it to me?
Due to the high volume of e-mail passing through our mail servers hourly, it is not possible for us to resubmit a newsletter. You might find the newsletter in your “deleted items” or “trash can” or “recycle bin” folders.

6. I am an AOL user, and I can’t read any of the newsletters I signed up for at MySanAntonio.com. Can you help me?
Versions 4.0 and 5.0 of the AOL mail program don't fully support “HTML” e-mail nor does AOL allow you to read “HTML” e-mail from the Web. In order to read our newsletters in the proper format, it is necessary for you to upgrade to AOL’s new, fully HTML-compatible version 9.0. This upgrade is free from AOL, and only takes a few minutes to complete. To upgrade to version 9.0, go to aol.com and enter the keyword “Upgrade.”

7. I use AOL, and I haven’t been receiving any of the newsletters I signed up for at DallasNews.com. Can you help me?
All of MySanAntonio.com’s newsletters are graphically-enhanced. If you have AOL’s “Mail Controls” set on your AOL account to block any e-mail containing graphics, our newsletters will not come through to your in-box. To deactivate this filter, go to the keyword “Mail Controls” on AOL and follow the simple instructions. Once this filter is removed from your AOL e-mail account, you should start receiving the newsletters in your in-box.

8. I am an AOL user, and I want to know why there are all these extra spaces in your newsletter?
When you go to the Web to read one of our HTML-formatted newsletters and click to open the message, AOL puts that message through a filter to insert HTML line breaks at the end of the every line of code in the message. The HTML will still download correctly, but the resulting newsletter has an abundance of blank space breaking up the layout. Unfortunately, we cannot prevent this from happening unless you upgrade to the latest AOL version 6.0 or higher, which is completely HTML compatible. This upgrade is free from AOL, and only takes a few minutes to complete. To upgrade to the latest version, go to aol.com and enter the keyword “Upgrade.”

9. I am a CompuServe user, and I can’t read any of the newsletters I signed up for at MySanAntonio.com. Can you help me?
Only CompuServe 6.0 and the latest versions are compatible with HTML e-mail. In order to read our newsletters in the proper HTML format, it is necessary for you to upgrade to CompuServe’s fully HTML-compatible version. To upgrade to version 6.0 or higher, go to compuserve.com and click on “Download 6.0” from the bottom of the page. It’s free and only takes a few minutes to complete.

10. I use Eudora as my e-mail program. Is it compatible with MySanAntonio.com’s newsletters?
Eudora 5.0 and later are completely compatible with our HTML newsletters, but earlier versions of Eudora are not HTML compatible. If you have an older version of Eudora and don’t wish to upgrade to an HTML compatible version at this time, you could also go to yahoo.com or hotmail.com and sign-up for a free Web-based e-mail account. Both Yahoo! and Hotmail will allow you to receive the newsletters and read them from your Internet service without any difficulty.

11. Novell’s GroupWise is my e-mail program, and all I receive is a blank e-mail with an attachment. How can I read your newsletter?
If you receive an envelope icon attached to the blank e-mail, you can read the newsletter by “dragging and dropping” the envelope icon onto your desktop, renaming the file with an “.html” extension, and opening the renamed file with a browser.

12. I use Novell’s GroupWise, and all I receive from you is a blank e-mail – no text, no graphics, no attachment. What happened to the newsletter?
If you subscribed to the newsletter at a work address, and your employer does not allow Internet access to employees, you won’t be able to receive our newsletter. All our newsletters are formatted in HTML, and you must have Internet access to receive them via e-mail. We suggest acquiring Internet access at another location, like home or school.

13. I am a Lotus Notes user, and I can’t read any of the newsletters I signed up for at MySanAntonio.com. Can you help me?
Lotus Notes 4.0 users can read our “HTML” e-mail newsletters in two easy steps. Instead of clicking on the “Newsletter Icon” and hitting the “Launch” option on the menu, click on the “View” option. By hitting “View” you will be able to read the newsletters. Lotus Notes version 5.0 is able to handle all types of e-mail.

If you have an older version of LotusNotes and don’t wish to upgrade to an HTML compatible version at this time, you could also go to yahoo.com or hotmail.com and sign-up for a free Web-based e-mail account. Both Yahoo! and Hotmail will allow you to receive the newsletters and read them from your Internet service without any difficulty.

14. Hotmail is my e-mail service and I don’t seem to be receiving any of the newsletters I subscribed to. Can you help me?
Hotmail often treats our newsletters as bulk mail (or spam mail). Hotmail offers an Inbox Protector that automatically filters out any bulk mail or spam mail to all intended recipients. In order to receive your newsletters, you will need to set a filter and direct your newsletters to your inbox or folder of choice. Here's how:

1. Select "Options" from the top nav bar of the Hotmail mail page.
2. Under "Mail Handling" click "Inbox Protector"
3. Scroll down to “Safe List” and enter “MySanAntonio.com” in the “Type in a single address or domain” box. (NOTE: this method only works for newsletters offered by MySanAntonio.com; for newsletters offered by other Belo sites, the user will need to insert that domain name instead of MySanAntonio.com.)
4. Click the “Add” button to include e-mail from MySanAntonio.com in your Safe List.
5. Click “OK” to accept this change to your Hotmail account.

15. Yahoo! is my e-mail browser and I don’t seem to be receiving any of the newsletters I subscribed to. Can you help me?
Yahoo! often treats our newsletters as bulk mail (or spam mail). Yahoo! automatically filters out any bulk mail or spam mail to all intended recipients. In order to receive your newsletters, you will need to set a filter and direct your newsletters to your inbox or folder of choice. Here's how:

1. Click "Options" on the left side of the Yahoo! e-mail page.
2. Under "Mail Management" click "Filters"
3. Click "Create"
4. Set the first line to read: "From header contains the phrase MySanAntonio.com". Be sure to leave the "Match Case" box unchecked. (NOTE: this method only works for newsletters offered by MySanAntonio.com; for newsletters offered by other Belo sites, the user will need to insert that domain name instead of MySanAntonio.com.)
5. At the "Deliver to:" line, choose the folder you would like to newsletters to be delivered to. You can choose "Inbox" or, if you would like to have the newsletters automatically delivered to another folder, select that folder from the list. Or choose "New Folder" and create one now.
6. Click "Save" when you are finished.
7. The next screen will confirm your filter settings. It should read something like: If “From” contains "MySanAntonio.com" then deliver to “Inbox”.

16. I use Microsoft Outlook. Will I be able to read the newsletters from MySanAntonio.com?
If you use Outlook 98 or Outlook 2000, you will be able to read our newsletters in their HTML format. However, neither Outlook 97 nor Outlook Express is compatible with HTML-formatted e-mail. If you have an older version of Outlook or Outlook Express and don’t wish to upgrade to an HTML compatible version at this time, you could also go to yahoo.com or hotmail.com and sign-up for a free Web-based e-mail account. Both Yahoo! and Hotmail will allow you to receive the newsletters and read them from your Internet service without any difficulty.

17. I use a Mac computer, and your newsletters appear as just a bunch of garbled computer code on my screen. Is there a compatibility problem with your newsletters and the Mac format?
All our newsletters are completely compatible with both the Mac and PC formats. The problem is with the html-compatibility of your e-mail program. Please find your e-mail program in our FAQ’s for the solution.

18. My e-mail program doesn’t support graphically enhanced e-mail like “HTML” e-mail. I can’t receive documents with photos, video or audio clips. Can you send me the newsletters in a text-only format?
We only offer our newsletters in HTML format. If your e-mail program does not allow you to view HTML e-mail, you can go to yahoo.com or hotmail.com and sign-up for a free e-mail account that does support graphically enhanced e-mail. You can then have your newsletters sent to that new e-mail address. To update the e-mail address in your registered account, please do the following:

1. Go to http://www.mysanantonio.com/sharedcontent/registration/membercenter.jsp
2. Sign-in using your old e-mail address and password.
3. Your account information will appear in the registration form. Update the e-mail address field with your new address and “submit.”
Your account has been updated and you will start receiving your newsletters at this new email address with the next scheduled mailing.

Is there a fee for searching the Archives? I already subscribe to the newspaper. Why do I have to pay for access to the Archives?
A. MySanAntonio.com provides free access for 10 days to staff-written stories and 30 days for columns. Use the story search or MySA Keyword Search to locate the story you are seeking.

The Archives are a premium service offered to readers who wish to locate stories they read in the newspaper or heard about from a friend. I can’t play videos – it wants me to download a player and I already have one.
Do you already have a RealPlayer or Windows Media Player installed? If not, click here.
If so, then it is only asking you to choose the player that you want to use to view the video you have selected. You should try selecting one of the players by clicking the radio button between the graphic and the name of the player and then clicking the submit button. If the video doesn't play, then go back to the settings window by clicking the "Change Your Settings" below the area that looks like a television. You should be presented with the same options. Try selecting the other player and clicking the submit button. If one of the players works for you, and you don't want to be asked to choose a video player every time you view video on MySanAntonio.com, then you should check the "Save these settings" option in the settings window. This will save your preferences on your machine and you will not be asked the next time you try to view a video. Remember you can always change the video player you want to use by clicking the "Change Your Settings" link in the video window. Let me know if this is not the problem or if you still have problems after doing this.
