Religious Freedom at Core of Democratic Development, Rice Says
Secretary of State, national security adviser discuss Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran

Freedom of religion is at the core of democratic development and is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says.  However, she adds, reconciling this principle with other values in society is not easy, particularly for new democracies. Saddam Hussein Feared Uprising More Than U.S. Forces
Interviews, papers depict regime cut off from military, political realities

Former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was more afraid of an internal uprising in 2003 and 2004 than invasion by coalition forces, according to a report released March 24 by the U.S. military. The report, drawing on interviews with former senior Iraqi leaders and captured documents, shows the true nature of a closed regime and how Saddam Hussein loyalists were afraid to speak the truth or carry out military orders for fear of retribution. U.S. Welcomes U.N. Renewal of Sudan Mission
Security Council calls for speedy transition to U.N. peacekeeping in Darfur

The United States welcomes the United Nations Security Council decision to renew the U.N. Mission in Sudan (UNMIS), according to a statement released by the Department of State March 24. The resolution stipulates that the mission will continue until September 24, and recognizes the transition from the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) to a U.N. peacekeeping mission in the war-torn region of Darfur. U.S. Designates Hizballah-Controlled TV, Radio as Terrorist Entities
Treasury action freezes U.S.-held assets, bars contact with U.S. entities

The Treasury Department has designated two Hizballah-controlled broadcasting outlets as global terrorist entities. In a March 23 announcement, Treasury named al-Manar, a satellite television operation either owned or controlled by Hizballah, as a media outlet funded by a terrorist organization and supported by the Iranian regime -- itself a state sponsor of terrorism. The Lebanese Media Group and its radio and TV subsidiaries were singled out as global terrorist entities for promoting Hizballah activities. (complete text)
