I’d Walk a Mile for a Wacky

My first memory of Wacky Packages begins in 1973.  Late spring to be exact and school would soon be out for summer.  I began noticing these funny little stickers appearing on notebooks and folders throughout the classrooms, and talk of Wacky Packages in the halls.  I thought the gags were hilarious, and the peel-and-stick factor was too tempting for any 9 year-old to resist.  I had to find some for myself.

Alas, it was not to be.  By the time school was over, I still hadn’t found them. MORE...

Some Wacky Packages never made it to the finished painting stage.  Many were left as simple pencil drawings known as "Rough Art".   Here are some that were submitted by Wacky Artists in the 1970's, but rejected by Topps.

1967 Die-Cut Series         Lost Wackys - 1

The Die-Cuts were Topps' very first Wacky Packages series.   They were produced as cards that could be punched out, then you'd lick the back and stick them like a stamp.  There were 44 titles + 12 number variations in the set (see checklist).

Of the 44 titles, 30 went on to become the 1st Series in 1973, but the other fourteen titles --

Alcohol Seltzer,  Boredom's Coffee,  Campy Spider Soup,  Coronation,  Cracked Animals,  Cracked Jerk,  Demented Tomatoes,  Fearstone,  Jolly Mean Giant,  Moron Salt,  Muller Low Life,  Ratz Crackers,  Schmutz,  &  Slum-Maid

were never printed as stickers in the original 1-16 series.

1968 Wacky Gumball Charms  Lost Wackys - 0

These little Wacky Trinkets were the first off-shoot item of Wacky Packages. They sold for a penny each in vending machines as part of a larger non-parody set of grocery store items. Only 4 wacky titles have been found so far -- Band-Ache,   Breadcrust Hash,  Fink, &  Demented Tomatoes -- but there are several shape and color variations.

1969 Wacky Ads   Lost Wackys - 1

Wacky Ads were the second set of Wacky Packages.  These were a set of 36 jumbo sized cards made to look like miniature billboards.

Like the Die-Cuts, the subjects could be punched out and pasted like a stamp.

1972 Cloth Stickers     Lost Wackys - 0

A Wacky revival began in 1972, with plans for two new sets.  The Cloth Stickers (called Cloth Patches at the time) and a new die-cut series which never made it past the test stage.

1973/4 Wacky Posters  Lost Wackys - 1

Actually, the Wacky Packages Posters were issued in two separate, but very similar sets.  The 1973 set had 24 titles, came in a yellow wrapper, and showed Weakies on the box.

The 1974 set also had 24 titles, but the three cereal titles (Toadal, Cheapios, & Weakies) were replaced with Kook, Ditch Boy, and Lipoff.   The 1974 posters were about 1/2" shorter than the previous set and came in blue wrappers with new artwork on the box.

1974 The Wacky Packages Craze  Lost Wackys - ?

If you're old enough to remember, 1974 was the summer of Wackys. The stickers were out selling baseball cards, which had been the undisputed #1 children's seller for 50 years.

Wacky Packs were all over the schools, on the covers of magazines, and written up in newspapers. You could wear your Ajerx T-Shirt to the store and get a free Wacky in a package of WonderBread. Or bring your Crakola beach ball to the pool, take a dip with a BustedFinger inner-tube and dry yourself off with a Hawaiian Punks towel.

There were pins, patches, magnets, iron-ons, and key chains. And at the end of the day, you could have a warm cup of milk in your Hipton drinking glass and lay your head down on a Run-Tony pillow to dream of the next new series.

1979 - 1980 Wacky Reprints     Lost Series - 1

Most wacky collectors are familiar with the Wacky Packages Reissue Series of 1979 and 1980. But Topps shocked the Wacky World in June of 2004, when they auctioned an unfinished checklist for a 5th series which was never published.

This lost set only had 55 stickers, but the most interesting aspect is the titles.  Band-Ache, Jolly Mean Giant, and nearly a dozen others from the Die-Cut & 1st Series were planned for re-release.

1980 The Wacky Cans   Lost Wackys - 12

The Wacky Cans were issued as a 12 title test set in 1980. This is one of the very last sets done by famed Wacky Package artist Norm Saunders before retiring.

They were about 2" tall and filled with Topps' Gold Rush Gum.

They are usually refered to as Wacky Can Labels rather than Wacky Cans, because the labels show up more often than the cans themselves.

The 12 titles were A'cent, Aquax, Coma, Dr. Peeper, Foney, Forger's, Hawaiian Punks, Libber's, Pigs Blue Ribbon, Pro-Grossout, Tropicanine, and White Duck.

1994 - 2004 The Un-Wacky Decade   Lost Wackys - 5

The Dark Ages of Wackys were upon us.   After the 1991 Series fell short of expectations, a planned 1992 Series came to a halt before all the artwork was completed.  The last we saw of Wackys were the 8 wacky pogs issued with the 1994 Mad-Caps set. The inclusion of these seemed more of an after-thought than a revival, and collectors presumed the worst, that the Wacky days were over.  Little did we know, there was a 1999 Series that was briefly considered, but dropped before production.

About this time, many of the childhood collectors were hitting their late twenties and early thirties. Obvious symptoms of nostalgia began to appear in collectors' circles and pop culture.
