What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a complete and co-ordinated approach to health care. It is the art and science of disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention using natural therapies and gentle techniques.

Doctors of Naturopathic Medicine are specialists in natural medicine and preventive health care, integrating scientific knowledge with traditional healing wisdom. They are health-care professionals who use safe, gentle, non-invasive therapies to assist the whole person in maximizing the body's inherent self-healing capacity.

Principles of Naturopathic Medicine

The following tenets govern the practice of naturopathic medicine. Click on any of the principles for more information.

Identify and Treat the Causes (Tolle Causam)

The naturopathic doctor seeks to identify and to remove the underlying causes of illness, rather than to merely eliminate or suppress symptoms.

First, Do No Harm (Primum Non Nocere)

Naturopathic doctors follow these three guidelines to avoid harming the patient:
  • Use methods and medicines which minimize the risk of harmful side effects, using the least force necessary to diagnose and treat.
  • Avoid, when possible, the harmful suppressing of symptoms.
  • Acknowledge, respect and work with the individual's self-healing process.

Doctor As Teacher (Docere)

Naturopathic doctors share information and knowledge with their patients and encourage self-responsibility for health.

Treat The Whole Person

Naturopathic doctors treat each patient by taking into account individual physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental and social factors.

Emphasize Prevention

Naturopathic doctors emphasize the prevention of disease by assessing risk factors, heredity and susceptibility to disease and making appropriate interventions in partnership with their patients to prevent illness.

Support The Healing Power of The Body (Vis Medicatrix Naturae)

Naturopathic Medicine recognizes an inherent self healing process in the person which is ordered and intelligent. Naturopathic doctors act to identify and remove obstacles to healing and recovery, and to facilitate and increase this inherent self-healing process.

Clinical Nutrition

Naturopathic doctors examine the relationship between diet and health. Special diets may be recommended as well as nutritional supplements (e.g. vitamins, minerals, enzymes, etc.).

Botanical (Herbal) Medicine

The use of plants for healing dates back to the beginning of civilization and is the foundation of modern pharmacology.

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine

Based on balancing the flow of Chi (energy) through meridian pathways, Oriental medicine includes the use of acupuncture, acupressure and Oriental herbs.

Homeopathic Medicine

Based on the principle of "like cures like" homeopathic medicine was developed in the 1700's. Minute amounts of natural substances are used to stimulate the body's self-healing abilities.

Naturopathic Hydrotherapy

The philosophy underlying naturopathic hydrotherapy is that health and healing is proportional to normal flow of healthy blood. Hot and cold applications to the skin via water cause changes in the circulation of the blood and lymph which lead to changes at the cellular, tissue, organ and organ system levels of the body.

LifeStyle Counseling and Stress Management

Physical, emotional, nutritional and environmental factors affect health. Naturopaths are trained to effectively educate patients about the interdependence of lifestyle and health.

Hello Robin, thanks so much for all your help. You have been so instrumental in giving me my life back...

Here is a testimonial you can use.

A few month ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Robin Walsh and I am grateful for her knowledge, expertise and sincerity. Robin has been able to diagnose my condition and get me back on track to better health.

It has been many, many years since I have felt well, however, it was the kind of unwell that always made you second guess my condition. I was not sick enough to be in bed but not well enough to live a normal life.

After trying out our medical system with no satisfying results, I got desperate to find out what was wrong. I was referred to Robin by my chiropractor and called her immediately. I met with Robin about mid April and she was quick to determine that I had severe Adrenal Fatigue. Although she had made a diagnosis on the first visit, she was thorough enough to double check her findings. Since that day, I been diligent in taking the course of medicines prescribed to me.

I am very happy to report that after two months, I am feeling better that I have in years. In fact, I can't remember feeling this good and I am not out of the woods yet. I know that it will take some time yet before I am completely recovered but that's ok because I have my life back and it can only get better. I am now looking forward to planning and living the best life I can and it is all due to Robin.

Robin, thank you for caring!

Hi Robin, I felt at ease in the relaxed atmosphere. Robin helped me understand how important nutrition is, and suggested realistic options...

My face is soo much better! (Jess has eczema) The dryness is totally gone and I feel much better! I'm trying to eat more fruit and veggies too, so it's going well! :)

Robin was very welcoming and pin-pointed the problems. I would definately recommend a visit to make you feel better!

Thanks a bunch!

Jess (aged 16)

Dear Dr Walsh, ND, I want to thank you for helping with my Crohn's disease...

I was diagnosed 13 years ago and was told by various doctors that, despite my surgery, I would be faced with a lifetime of difficulty, discomfort, fatigue, and frequent bowel movements. I spent my days negotiating where I was in relation to the nearest bathroom.

Now that I have made the simple changes you prescribed I am finally free! I no longer need to restrict my activities. My energy level is high and I feel great!

Thank you so much, Robin. Anyone suffering from Crohn's should contact you so they can get back to enjoying a more normal lifestyle.

With gratitude,

Kathie Steele

My wife and I met with Robin Walsh for the first time while my wife was pregnant with our second child. We had received some news from her O.B. about a virus she was carrying...

No one took any time to explain what this virus was and how it could affect my wife or the baby. Robin met with us outside of her regular business hours to explain what it was and suggested natural medications to help minimize any harm in coming to the baby and my wife. She was very well prepared and did research before we met.

All of Robin's suggestions worked fantastic, my wife gave birth to our second daughter weighing an even 7 pounds, with no complications or side affects to the baby as doctors suggested there might be.

Since our first meeting with Robin we have been back a few times. She is courteous, knowledgeable, and above all takes an interest in her patients and how things turned out. We have seen her at times outside of her office and she always is quick to ask if everyone is doing better.

Our family will continue to visit with Robin as sicknesses come up, and I am sure we will always get the same great level of satisfaction we have in the past.

The Lobsinger Family.
