Day 2 Update

An update from the late afternoon:

Live blogging is almost over. We're on a break until dinner, which is scheduled for 6:30 with featured speakers of NC Congresswoman Sue Myrick and Virginia Senator George Allen. I won't be live blogging the dinner because that just seems too rude to me. Heck, I'm not really comfortable walking around and taking pictures...

So I'll attend the dinner, I'll get some pictures, and I'll take notes about what is said. I imagine the dinner will run until at least 8:30pm EST. After that I've got a 2-1/2 hour ride home. Then I'll be sleeping (hopefully not BEFORE I get home).

I will try and post a quick update immediately after the dinner with more notes, details and descriptions first thing tomorrow morning.

Issues: How to be a Good N.C. Conservative

This forum is titled "How to be a Good Conservative." There's a number of panelists that plan to tell about things that conservative citizens in North Carolina can do to help advance the conservative cause in North Carolina.

Ryan Francis DeLuca, NC State Director of Americans for Prosperity is the moderator (and a U.S. Marine). To speak are Steve Noble, Chairman of Called2Action; Ryan Irisik, Representative of the NC Grassroots NRA; Dan Page, former NC Legislator; and Frank Rouse, former NC GOP Chairman.

This forum has a full house, with almost 100 people in attendance.

Issues: Eminent Domain

Next up with the live blogging, an issues forum about eminent domain. This is the least attended forum that I've seen here so far. Every other forum was absolutely packed to nearly overflowing. This forum has only about 30 people.

Scheduled to speak are Thomas Smith, VP of the Civitas Institute (current member of the Durham city council); Daren Bakst, Legal and Regulatory Policy Analyst for the John Locke Foundataion; Scott Bullock, Senior Attorney at the Institute for Justice (one who argued in Kelo v. New London); and Chris Sinclair, President of the Triangle Community Coalition.

More and more people have been arriving late, perhaps because lunch went a little long...the room is about full now -- about 40-45 people.

David Keene at the NCCLC

davidkeene.jpg

David Keene addressed about 320 people at the Conservative Leadership Conference Lunch.

I had the pleasure of sharing my table with Jason Lewis (yes, the Jason Lewis who is on WBT1110 each afternoon from 3-6pm); Dr. David Hartgen, William Maready, Wes Atkins, and Brett Mitchell. Thank you all for wonderful company for the noontime meal.

I also must mention that while each meal at the conference has been started with the Pledge of Allegiance and a blessing; this meal we were treated to a wonderful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, a Capella by none other than the aforementioned Brett Mitchell. It was a very impressive voice and singing. Thank you again, Brett, for a great and inspiring job.

Issues: Education

First issue forum attended by Ogre today is the Education forum. There's five panelists and I'll be adding to this post as they are speaking. Isn't live blogging fun? This post will update throughout the morning until after the forum, which will end at approximately 11:30am EST.

This forum promises to provide information about the (very broken) education system in North Carolina. People on the panel include George Leef, Director of the John William Pope Center for Higher Education Policy; Terry Stoops, Policy Analyst, John Locke Foundation; Jason Bennett, Policy Analyst at the Civitas Institute; Lindalyn Kakadelis, Director of the North Carolina Education Alliance; and Bob Luddy, Founder, Franklin Academy & St. Thomas More Academy.

Virginia Foxx, NCCLC Breakfast

virginiafoxx1.jpgAnother day, more conservatism! Today we had a breakfast that featured as a guest speaker Virginia Foxx, first-term Congressional Representative from North Carolina -- who was recently rated as the "most conservative" member of North Carolina's delegation.

Once again, I had the honor of meeting a number of additional conservatives, everyday people like yourselves, that are interested in conservative positions. With me were Tom and Lindalyn Kakadelis, John and Wanda Conway (John is running for election to the NC House -- I'm still working on links), Laney Funderbunk, and two college Republican volunteers who were helping out this weekend, Chad Hilton and Randy Costa. Thank you all for the excellent company and conversation during breakfast.

J.D. Hayworth at the NCCLC

jdhayworth2.jpgAs previously mentioned, an absolutely outstanding speech by J.D. Hayworth. He's recently written a book called "Whatever it Takes." He re-affirmed the conservative position by saying:

We understand that the Constitution Means what it says

A brief aside before the great details of the dinner -- I had the honor of having dinner with a number of Conservatives -- just regular people who want the government to work with the conservative principles of freedom first:

Marilyn Avila, candidate for election to the North Carolina House, Michael Dodson, Eleanor Quick, Alex, Andy Wright, Marc Conaghan, and Jason Wells. Thank you all for your attendance and your excellent company at the dinner speech.

J.D. Hayworth at the NCCLC

J.D. Hayworth at the NCCLC

J.D Hayworth, distinguished Congressman from Arizona's 5th district was the featured speaker at first evening dinner of the North Carolina Conservative Leadership Conference. He is serving in his 6th term in Congress.

Congressman Hayworth's speech was entertaining and informative. He made Tom Tancredo look soft on immigration. He started out with

The first and most basic purpose of government is to protect our citizens

He said no less than four times:
It is a time for choosing

Congressman Hayworth clearly understands the situation facing America today.

I've got lots more, but I want to get this first post up now as I write the next part.

NCCLC Break

I'm on a short break now. After the rather contentious ending to the illegal immigration discussion panel (at least no one tried to call them "undocumented"), I've a break before heading to dinner. I've checked into the rather luxurious room here at the Sheraton Imperial, and am trying out their wireless. So far, so good.

Good rousing discussion and debate about the conservative position. If you're a conservative and you're not here, I think you're missing some really good stuff. There are a number of legislators, elected officials, and candidate here. I'll try and meet as many of them as I can and report back that they were here, perhaps indicating who are actual conservatives.

Next up is a dinner with two speakers: Arizona Congressman J.D. Hayworth and C.C. Goldwater, Barry Goldwater's granddaughter. They haven't listed the topics of their talks, but I'm betting illegal immigration will get in there somewhere...

I'm think I'll not live blog from the dinner because it somehow seems rude to me. I'll take the camera and the notebook and report back later this evening on who said what, the best I can.

NCCLC Illegal Immigration

Next up, from 3:30-4:45pm EST is another issues forum on Illegal Immigration. Quite a panel for this discussion:

Rick Martinez of the Raleigh News and Observer

Ron Woodard, Director of NC Listen

Jack Martin, Special Projects Director for Federation for American Immigration Reform

Steve Bizzell, Sheriff of Johnson County

Fern Shubert, former legislator and Republican candidate for governor of North Carolina.

About 100 or 110 people are attending this issues forum, but that's only because all the seats are completely full and there's about 15 people standing in the back to listen in.

Live Blogging the NC Conservative Leadership Conference

All set up and running. After making a couple wrong turns trying to find the hotel (stupid Mapquest -- there IS no Emperor Blvd!) -- we're here. I don't have numbers yet, but there's people all over the first floor of the lovely Sheraton Imperial Hotel and Conference Center (Teach? I don't see you anywhere).

tomfetzer.jpgFirst up, at 2pm EST, is the first of 5 "Issues Forums." There's a number going on at a time, so participants pick one and attend it. First up for me is the "Budget and Taxes" forum. It's to be moderated by Tom Fetzer, former Mayor of Raleigh.

A few quotes from his introduction:

No matter what legislators say, it's where you spend your money that defines where you priorities are.

Why does government exist? To serve us -- to serve the people.

NC Cash for Drug Addicts

And no, it's not to "help" them kick the habit. New support has arisen for spending over half a million dollars to reduce the cost of doing drugs by giving them all free needles. Again the stupid arguments rear their ugly heads -- it's about helping them, it's about safety, etc., etc.

Look, if YOU "community activists" want to take YOUR money and buy needles, you just go right ahead. My problem is that you're taking MY cash, that I work for, and you're buying needles for people who do NOT work so they can inject themselves with drugs! This isn't about safety or anything else -- it's about keeping people hooked on drugs.

One of the head lunatics claims that those who oppose this utter waste of taxpayer money are "shortsided." No, Evelyn Foust, "state AIDS director with DHHS" (government bureaucrat whose salary I am paying), we're trying to stop government waste and make you and your job LESS important -- so I can see why you're opposed to me.

Government Paying to Lobby Government

I've seen this situation before, and it just absolutely amazes me that people simply do not care enough to do anything about it. Subjects Peons Scum Citizens of Wake County, do you know what your county commission is doing with your tax money? They're paying someone who you just voted out of the Legislature to lobby the NC Legislature to raise your taxes.

Seriously.

I just don't get it. I can understand free people and organizations deciding to spend their hard-earned money to promote their position to elected representatives, but other governments? Am I the only person who thinks this is total insanity and the opposite of representative government?

This fellow, David Miner, lost an election to the General Assembly. The people of the county did NOT want him to represent them. Now the County Commission has agreed to pay him $5,000 a month to represent THEM at the General Assembly.

Can someone please explain to me why the county government needs someone to represent them? Why can't the representatives in the legislature represent citizens, instead of governments? If government agencies need representatives in the legislature, why do we need people to vote for their own representatives?

If someone sets up a government that is run by the people and exists for the people, please let me know -- I'll move there in a minute.

Minimum Wage B.S.

Another year, another attempt to raise minimum wage laws in North Carolina. Same lies, same b.s., same potential results. A "coalition" of socialists, "North Carolinians for Fair Wages," is a coalition of unions and those who would continue suppression of minorities (the NAALCP).

Again, the claims:

an increase to $6 an hour would directly affect 100,000 workers in North Carolina. They say that an additional 200,000 workers who already make at least $6 an hour could see a raise, too, as an indirect result.

You know, they're right here. It will "affect" 100,000 workers -- 50,000 will see wage increases, 50,000 will lose jobs, and all 100,000 will be forced to pay higher prices for goods and services. And the 200,000 who will see an indirect result? Sure -- again, many losing their jobs.

Minimum wage laws are archaic remains of a bygone past. Another moron says,

Nobody ever says that [negative effects] about the CEO's salary, and all the advantages of CEOs, when their salaries go up,

It's called economics of a free society, "Reverend" William Barber. The CEO EARNS that money, instead of getting a raise just because the law demands it. If you weren't such a jealous person, you'd see that and work to earn your own money instead of turning so green with envy over what the Jones' have.

Minimum wage laws MAY have had a purpose years ago. In today's society they are simply not needed -- all laws regarding minimum wage should be abolished. After all, American's won't do those jobs, anyway, right?

NC Conservative Agenda: Summary

For the past couple weeks, I've been blogging about the agenda of the North Carolina Conservatives. It is an introduction to the first-ever North Carolina Conservative Leadership Conference in Durham, starting tomorrow. I'll be blogging live from that location Friday afternoon and Saturday and hope to hear a lot more about the conservative agenda for North Carolina.

Here's the agenda items:

  1. Eliminate so-called Temporary Taxes

  2. Limit Spending By Adopting the Taxpayer Protection Act

  3. Eliminate the Gas Tax Increase

  4. Help Communities Build Schools

  5. Eliminate State Benefits to Illegal Immigrants & Make English Official Language

  6. Adopt Defense of Marriage Act

  7. Pass Constitutional Amendment To Protect Property Rights

An ambitious list, to be sure. But there's a lot of good things that would happen if even some of those items can be put in place. Does your candidate (if you have one) for the general assembly support this agenda? It certainly would give you a reason to vote for one candidate over another, wouldn't it?

Brawley vs. Ray (NC 95th House)

I recently attended a scheduled debate between the two candidates for the 95th House District of North Carolina. The candidates are Robert Brawley and Karen Ray. I described my view of the debate here. Someone just stopped by and added their opinion to the mix:

Karen Ray is a very upstanding citizen who works very hard for everyone in her district. Keeping jobs here and creating new ones are of foremost concern to her. Robert Brawley has tried and will continue to try and distort the facts that he can not back up himself. Robert Brawley has a very shady past in his history in the House of Representatives. If Robert Brawley had done so much for our area as far as roads and infrastructure why are we still in this situation we are. He was there for 18 years and has nothing to show for it besides being disloyal to the Republican Party. People in the 95th district should keep posted to the local press and other media and really see what type of politician Robert Brawley is.

Thanks for adding your opinion!

I also noticed a local news article where the two candidates really let one another have it. They're both running from any association with Jim Black -- Karen Ray apparently actually campaigned for the disgraced Democrat Speaker of the House, apparently got a cash reward for doing so.

Karen Ray claims that Robert Brawley tried to support Black back in 1997 for cash, too. Guess that just shows how much cash Black was spreading around over the years, bribing anyone and everyone, doesn't it?

Hey, if you've got an opinion on the Brawley-Ray race, feel free to weigh in here!

John Ross Hendrix v. Vernon Robinson

Well now. A short time ago, I posted about Vernon Robinson, who is running for election to the 12th 13th Congressional District. That post just generated a comment (apparently) from John Ross Hendrix, his opponent (I have to say apparently because this IS the internet, and anyone COULD have posted that).

Mr. Hendrix says

a Republican WILL win the 13th district race for the Congress

I bet that's news to the current incumbent, Brad Miller (D) -- but hey, anything that moves away from the socialist/democrat platform is an improvement to me.

John Ross Hendrix does have a website. On it, he apparently sets himself up as a "moderate," with this statement:

Feed the hungry. House the homeless. Educate the jobless. Secure our borders. Protect the earth. Explore the universe. Establish complete justice. Preserve our freedoms. Protect the Constitution from the extremists, to left and the Right. Bring that rare commodity, common sense, to government.

I can't say I agree with all that -- I absolutely do NOT think that government should have anything to do with feeding ANYONE or providing housing for ANYONE -- it's just not government's job. But hey, right now my biggest issue is borders. Please do check out both websites, and I'm going to attempt to contact both candidates and see if I can get their positions on the current border PROBLEMS...

And if either candidate is at the John William Pope Institute North Carolina Conservative Leadership Conference this weekend, I'll be sure and get some more from them.

$5 Million for Midnight Basketball

Democrats in North Carolina continue to spread socialism and refuse to admit reality. Governor Easley discovered that he was bringing in tons of cash with his lottery, so he gave away $2 million for

mentoring programs, law enforcement training, and after-school program

Now, if you're a Democrat, you know what that will do. Actually, if you're a conservative, you know too, it's just different from what the Democrats think. Governor Easley, of course, claims that by being nice and creating new after-school programs, that gang-violence will go away.

If you have a clue about reality, you know that this will have absolutely no effect on crime at all. It's been tried and tired again. "Talking" to criminals does not make them stop committing crime, it just doesn't. But that doesn't matter to Democrats.

Look for this to be used in Democrat advertising and campaigning in the fall as "crime fighting" money. It's a lie, as usual.

Fair Tax Blogburst

This week's promotion of the fair tax relates to immigration. Here is this week's Blogburst:

In lieu of the recent events transpiring over the course of the last two weeks, Terry and I thought it would be prudent to discuss the implications of the Fair Tax and how it would possibly cooperate with the immigration discussion. Rest assured, we strive to remain non-partisan, as we both firmly believe that the Fair Tax is an issue that liberals, conservatives, and libertarians can all come together on. This is why I will attempt to refrain from inserting some of my beliefs into this week's burst as it pertains to the immigration policies Congress is grappling with.

Comprehensive = Amnesty

The new "code words" are out. The redefinition of the English language to suit the politicians continues. The latest is that when you hear "comprehensive immigration," that means amnesty. If you do not support amnesty and total forgiveness of crimes, you are against "comprehensive" immigration reform.

Fox News is reporting President Bush says he wants a "comprehensive" bill:

that will cause the people in the interior of this country to recognize and enforce the laws and a bill that will enable us to have a guest worker program that will recognize that there are people here working hard in jobs that Americans don't want.

So he wants a law that will enforce the law but ignore the law at the same time. He wants to completely ignore the current criminals who have invaded this country by rewarding them with a guest worker program: amnesty.

And dammit, stop already with the complete and total LIE that Americans don't want those jobs! It's a damn LIE.

In North Carolina, for example, landscaping and yard care is a seasonal job -- it's only really needed in the summertime. College students and high school students aren't in school during the summertime. Those jobs used to be filled by the students. THEY WERE DOING THOSE JOBS. It is very simply a lie to claim that Americans "don't want", or "won't do" those jobs.

States, since the federal government will not do it's job, I hope there's someone out there who will. I hope there's one brave state that will stand up to this invasion and try and stop it. States HAVE that right, whether the federal government wants to admit it or not.

NC Conservative Agenda: Point 7

Continuing the discussion regarding the 7-point NC Conservative Agenda. Today is Point 7:

Pass Constitutional Amendment To Protect Property Rights

Once again, feel free to weigh in either for or against this idea for North Carolina (even if you're not from North Carolina).
The Supreme Court held that government could take private property by eminent domain for a public use as well as a public purpose. With this ruling, North Carolina needs state constitutional protection from government seizure of private property for perceived public benefits. Other states have experienced the taking of an individual’s property by government to give to another individual who will change the use and increase the tax revenue. The basic right of an individual to own property is at stake.

Some legislators argue there is no need to amend the N.C. Constitution because they say our state is relatively restrictive. State law can be changed at any time, and often without public notice. The only true protection is a constitutional amendment.

I don't really understand the opposition to this amendment. Well, actually, I do. The people who oppose this amendment claim, as shown above, that the laws are already in place. Those, however, are the exact same people who are in a position to CHANGE those laws any time they would like.

Those who oppose this amendment are saying that they want to reserve the right to take land at any time, by any means, if they deem it necessary. Say hello to the Democrats of North Carolina, because that is their position -- they want that option open to them, just in case they think they can get away with it "need" it.

After Kelo v. New London, this amendment is clearly needed. If the law is "already there" to protect people's property, why not just make the law a bit better and put it in the state Constitution? Yes, I am aware that the Democrats will ignore the Constitution when it doesn't suit them, but this will just make it a little bit more difficult and protect property rights just a little bit more.

I've mentioned before that without property rights, you have absolutely NO rights at all. This amendment is sorely needed, and I support it's passage absolutely -- and therefore it will not get anywhere. Again, I've talked to my "sources" in the Legislature, and I'm told that the Democrats are NOT interested in protecting property rights and that they will not even consider this bill.

More Anti-Freedom from Mass

Yesterday I highlighted a story from Massachusetts that to me, seems absolutely incredible. The story was about how the state is forcing people to spend their own money as the state directs, and if you refuse to, they will fine you and take your money. To someone who holds freedom in the highest regard, this is absolutely repugnant to me.

However, it seems there are some in Massachusetts who actually like destroying freedom. Brian, a self-described "working man of Massachusetts," tries to support crushing freedom using the same tactics that the left has used for years, and the same tactic that gets totalitarian governments in power: emotion. Brian says

I, the working man of Massachusetts, have no problem helping people who need it.

Brian, that's nice. However, it has absolutely nothing to do with this law. You can help people all you want. No one is stopping you from helping anyone, anytime you like. Before this bill passed, you could help people. After the bill passed, you could still help people. This law does not affect you helping people in any way, shape or form.

Except -- the bill actually stops ME from helping people! It takes away money from me that I could have used to help people. This bill takes money from people who earned it -- that is NOT helping people. Making people into slaves to government does not help people. Brian, you go ahead and help people -- but by what right do you claim MY money to help them?

So, Brian, you want to help people but you don't want to use YOUR money, you want to use MY money. In a free country (which we are clearly no more) that's called robbery. Since the government is doing it and I will go to jail if I fail to comply, that's armed robbery. And unfortunately, I cannot call the police to protect my property, because it's the police that are taking it.

Peter Porcupine, another resident of the totalitarian republic of Massachusetts weighs in with some more of the reasoning behind the law:

The rationale behind the plan - and I'm not wild about it - is that every other solution offered has involved a surcharge on employers, general tax, etc. And we DO pay now, through the Uncompensated Care Pool which funds hospital emergency rooms.

Instead of just whacking businesses again, for the first time, this places the responsibility on the INDIVIDUAL to provide for their own health insurance. When I was an agent (full disclosure) all the twenty-somethings who thought they were invincible refused the coverage - until they fell off a roof or something and wound up in...the Uncompensated Care Pool, which was a taxpayer black hole.

I realize it violates libertarian principles to be forced to purchase coverage - but hospitals cannot turn you away and this is a damn sight better than the usual 'soak the business' solution.

Sorry, Peter, you're falling into that same liberal trap -- the trap that says government is good, no matter what it does, so if there's a problem, the solution MUST be more government -- and that is bad.

No, armed robbery of citizens is NOT a good solution at all.

By what right does the state claim my money at all? Why is it my obligation to take care of everyone else's medical care? You do not have a right to medical care, free or otherwise, in any free society, period. To claim that you have that right means that you have the right to the labor of another man -- and that's just completely wrong.

If you take care of yourself, eat right, exercise, avoid smoking and high risk activities your whole life; but I do everything poorly, including many high risk activities, how it is right for me to force you to pay for my medical care? The people who are good and right are being forced to pay for those who are not -- and that's utterly and completely wrong.

I yearn and desire freedom -- a freedom to actually be responsible for myself. I want a freedom where I can take care of myself health wise and not be financially punished for it. I want the freedom to take the money I work for and help those who *I* want to help, rather than those who are wasteful and unproductive.

And yes, Brian, I find it incredibly ironic that Massachusetts, one of the birthplaces of freedom, would be one of the first states to work so hard to completely and totally remove freedom.

More Government = Less Freedom

Here is a long commentary written by Cheryl Welch of the Star-News of Wilmington, NC. It's a long, detailed complaint about, well, I'll summarize for you so you won't have to read the whole thing: If only we had less freedom and more government, less people would die.

Now I can't tell if this article is supposed to be in the "news" section of the paper or not, but it's clearly an opinion piece with a few facts carelessly tossed about. The premise is that a woman was choked because her husband choked her while working for a private health facility and if the state had screened him properly, he wouldn't have been working there, and therefore wouldn't have choked his wife.

The article bemoans the fact that this man was accused of a crime and was not immediately fired from his job. Seriously. Yes, the day he was convicted of a crime, he was fired, but that's not good enough for the author of this piece -- he apparently should have been fired when he was simply accused of wrongdoing. I wonder if Ms. Welch applies that principle to her existence, too.

She goes on to complain that nurse's aides, certified by the state, do not have a criminal check done to get certified, but actually DO have a criminal check done before they're hired by the facility. I'm not exactly sure why this is a problem, but Ms. Welch thinks the government should maintain all certification processes and include criminal background checks at the government level, instead of allowing employers access to that information.

I'm not sure exactly why anyone thinks that government can do a better job than private industry. Government has as much a vested interest as private industry, only a worse one -- private industry is limited by money, while government only exists today to create more government.

Instead of increasing regulation, the state should DECREASE nurse's aide regulation -- allow a private group to certify nurse's aides any way they want to. That would even allow MORE THAN ONE registry! It would allow nationwide registries! It would create levels of competition never seen before in nursing. But that would also increase freedom, which big-government supporters like Ms. Welch apparently do not like.

Fat Car Seats

Great. In case you missed the news, apparently American children are now too fat for car seats. The news article claims that "most" of a quarter of a million overweight 1-6 year olds are overweight -- almost 5% of 3-year olds.

Tell me again about how our economy is so suffering that we have so many kids eating so much food and being so sedentary that they're overweight? In another government report, supposedly 23% of children age 2-5 were "overweight." To combat the fatness and laziness of today's children, car seat manufacturers are creating new car seats "to accommodate" the fatties. I just wonder how these will be marketed:

Safeguard Doublewides: for the chunky child

How about
Bretax Child Seats: Now in size F, VF, and Super-F

or maybe
Safety Enormo-Seats: Now Fits children up to 220 lbs!

And the top of the line:
Eddie Bauer Leather XXXL Car Seat: 2 entire cows used to ensure enough leather to line the entire seat!

Feel free to add your own...

Mass CRUSHES freedom

Now everyone knows that Massachusetts is a very liberal place. They keep electing Ted Kennedy, so that much should be obvious. In order to get elected, you HAVE to be a liberal -- it's just required, no matter if you put a "D" or an "R" after your name. Governor Mitt Romney proves that by agreeing to an incredibly anti-freedom bill.

The socialists in Massachusetts are really celebrating. They're also helping to ensure that I will never, ever, live or do business in that state (which is how states are supposed to work, by the way) -- but I also want to stop my money from flowing into the state via federal dollars.

The bill REQUIRES all citizens of Massachusetts to have health insurance, even if you do not want it. That's completely wrong. And yes, it really does DEMAND that you get health insurance -- if you do not, you will actually be FINED by the state! Yes, the state of Massachusetts is going to FINE you if you do not spend your money the way they tell you to.

State Senator Richard T. Moore, celebrating the state takeover of individuals, says, "I think every member of the Legislature will be able to be very proud of [the bill]." How utterly insane is that? In case you missed it:

The State of Massachusetts is Determining how you spend your money. If you do not spend YOUR money the way they demand, YOU WILL BE FINED.

And yes, of course, if the state determines that you do not make "enough" money, they will be glad to force someone ELSE to pay for your involuntary health insurance. Article I of the Massachusetts Constitution says:
All people are born free and equal and have certain natural, essential and unalienable rights; among which may be reckoned the right of enjoying and defending their lives and liberties; that of acquiring, possessing and protecting property; in fine, that of seeking and obtaining their safety and happiness. Equality under the law shall not be denied or abridged because of sex, race, color, creed or national origin.

That clearly doesn't apply here. I'm not holding my breath waiting for the ACLU to jump on in here to defend these people's rights -- but if the ACLU were actually interested in civil rights, this would be a perfect case. If people have the right to "acquire, possess, and protect property," then how does the state have the right to demand that property be spent in certain ways?

But hey, if you're a lazy bum, feel free to head on over to Massachusetts -- you get all the free healthcare you want. And if you're a working person, you really should get the heck out while the state will still let you.

Charlotte Government Thoughts

Those who read this site (thank you!) very quickly notice that I have a very low opinion of government. I honestly believe that the vast majority of those who are in government, especially those who consider it a "career," have serious problems dealing with anything involving reality.

I believe government is a necessary evil that should do as absolutely little as possible, because nearly anything they do, they WILL screw it up. Why? Because they don't know how to think like an actual human being. Don't believe me? Do you know anyone else on the entire planet who is NOT in government that actually thinks that if there is a problem with too much congestion, REDUCING the number of lanes will help?

Well, Charlotte City government claims it will. In a way, Jeff Taylor's got it right when he thinks they're smoking something. Actually, it's more like these people are actively working forward with their war on the automobile, it's the people who actually believe them that are really out there.

NC Conservative Agenda: Point 6

Continuing the discussion regarding the 7-point NC Conservative Agenda. Today is Point 6:

Adopt Defense of Marriage Act

Once again, feel free to weigh in either for or against this idea for North Carolina (even if you're not from North Carolina).
Marriage is a sacred institution under attack in many states. With other states legalizing same-sex marriage, the attack on traditional marriage has just begun. Conservatives should fight for a vote on a constitutional amendment to define marriage as between one man and one woman.

This bill is introduced every year. This year, it was Senator Forrester in the Senate. He continues to introduce it and push it. However, since it was introduced by a Republican, it never moves anywhere -- despite 24 co-sponsors. That means at least 50% of the North Carolina Senate is a co-sponsor and would vote for the bill. If it were voted on, it would only need ONE vote to pass...and that's why the Democrats won't let it see the light of day.

The proposed bill is rather simple -- it's not even a page long. It just asks for a Constitutional Amendment that adds, "Constitutional amendment to provide that marriage is the union of one man and one woman at one time, and this is the only marriage that shall be recognized as valid in this State." That's it.

Note there's nothing there about taking away ANY rights from ANY people at all. It's very simple and 78% of the people of North Carolina support it. And the Democrats shouldn't really mind -- they disobey the Constitution now when they don't like it, so this won't affect them at all.

The so-called "gay community" shouldn't care either -- this doesn't stop them from doing what they want to do in the privacy of their own home. This doesn't take away any of their rights. But they will still scream and yell because they don't want rights, they want special rights and they want complete and total approval of their actions -- which I will not give them.

I completely support this agenda item. I'm not sure if it can pass or not, just because all it takes is a couple Democrats who love gay people to get the bill stalled in a committee -- as they've done in the past. However, if Senator Forrester lets the bill get filed by a Democrat, it will likely pass quickly -- and the good Senator has told me that he's more concerned with getting things passed that are good and right than getting his name on them.

John Rhodes understands the Lottery

John Rhodes is a Republican representative in the North Carolina General Assembly, in the House. He is vehemently hated by the "leadership" of the House because he sees through the lies and he's not afraid to tell the truth. He'll vote for the right thing (most of the time), and when Black & Company ask him to lie, he ignores them.

In return, he gets punished. He's made to sit in the back row. He won't be called on when he asks for a turn to speak. He gets the worst offices and the least funding for office staff. His phones might not work on some days. Either you get along with Jim Black, and do as he says, or you get punished by him.

But John Rhodes doesn't let that bother him. He'll still tell it like it is. His position on the lottery is to simply state the truth:

"It's another revenue stream and that's one of the biggest oppositions I've had to it. Government has taken enough of our hard-earned tax dollars and we don't need to be providing another revenue stream.

Anyone who claims it's for the children, education, or anything else is just simply lying. The Democrats in the legislature want more money, and they'll do whatever it takes to get that money -- just so they can spend it. Calling this lottery the "education" lottery is a complete and total lie, designed to get people to say (and I've already heard many saying it), "Well, at least if I lose the money goes for education."

That's simply a lie. But the Democrats don't care, because they're getting more money to spend.

Take an American Flag to Work Day

Thursday, April 6, 2006.

All patriotic Americans who have been concerned (to put it mildly) about the predominance of flags of foreign nations at the recent pro-illegal alien marches and the desecration of the American flag by supporters of illegal aliens are being asked to participate in a demonstration of patriotism and American sovereignty by taking an American flag with them to work, school or anywhere this Thursday, April 6.

How it works is simple: Proudly carry an American flag with you wherever you are in public. Small parade style flags on sticks would work best for those who commute by bus or subway and those who walk to work. Carry it around with you when you go out for lunch and when you leave work.

Wear red, white and blue patriotic attire. Fly the American flag at your home. Fly an American flag from your car antenna. Tape an American flag in your car window. The goal is to have Old Glory be given the prominence it deserves and to remind everyone--politicians, illegal aliens and their enablers--that the American flag comes first in this country.

Folks have been clamoring for a march to respond to the pro-illegal alien marches. This is a way to do that without having to take time off from work and family responsibilities and still take a stand in public.

John McCain has been touting the pro-illegal alien marches as being effective in influencing polticians in Washington. Now's your chance to exercise your influence.

Please pass this message along to everyone you know and every patriotic blogger you can think of. Contact any patriotic group you belong to. Contact your local media and talk radio shows. We don't have George Soros to bankroll a publicity campaign. We just have us. Stand up for America and Old Glory this Thursday.

Count me in.

Short-Sighted "Investors"

I caught a portion of some investing show this morning on Fox News. They were debating the effect of illegal immigration on the stock market. One commentator, Jonathan Hoenig, was claiming to give investing advice, but was being incredibly closed-minded, ignorant, or just very, very short-sided.

He was supporting illegal immigration. He wanted, literally, as many illegal immigrants as he could get into the US to clean his yard. He claimed that no one had any right to stop them because HE wanted them to mow his lawn.

He then tried to explain how "good" illegals were for companies and investors, by claiming that they were "cheap" labor and that labor costs had been kept down because of the illegals. He claimed that companies were spending less money and keeping profits up by using illegals -- and therefore they were good for the country.

Of course, what Mr. Hoenig left out, as many do who support the criminal invasion from Mexico, is the COSTS these people bring with them. When a family with 2 kids and a pregnant wife comes over so the male head of household can supply "cheap labor" so businesses can make money, that costs EVERYONE ELSE, and yes, even the businesses, in higher taxes to pay for them!

Illegals cost over $500 BILLION in taxpayer outlays in the form of medical services, medicare payout, section 8 housing, aid to dependent families, educational services, and plenty more. They are NOT helping our economy. They are NOT helping businesses, except in the VERY short term.

Please understand all the finances at work here before you support the criminal invasion because of "cheap labor" -- it's NOT cheap, it costs MORE in the long run because of the higher taxes needed to PAY for all the government services that are given away. Remove all the government handouts, and we'll talk about importing cheap labor -- if they're still interested in coming.

Whack-a-Muslim

Michelle Malkin is reporting on Irianian Muslims/Terrorists still going nuts over the Moo-Hammed cartoons. According to the report:

Members of Iran's Revolutionary Guards beat themselves with chains during a religious gathering against cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammad

So their protest consists of beating themselves with chains? Here, whack yourselves one more time for me:
mohommed.jpg

Just two steps remain:

1. Convince the Muslims to use this chain to beat themselves so they might actually shut up:

chain-1.jpeg

2. Convince the criminal aliens invading this country from Mexico and points south to join in and "protest" the Muslim way until they knock themselves out with the chain, too.

Idiots.

North Carolina Conservative Agenda: Point 5

Continuing the discussion regarding the 7-point NC Conservative Agenda. Today is Point 5:

Eliminate State Benefits to Illegal Immigrants & Make English Official Language

Once again, feel free to weigh in either for or against this idea for North Carolina (even if you're not from North Carolina).
The glue that has held our great and diverse nation together is the English language. But today, our state has become a silent proponent of a dual language. The state has become an enabler for illegal Hispanic immigrants to keep their native language and refuse to learn English. The state makes available all forms and applications in Spanish, and requires interpreters at state agencies to help non-English speaking individuals.

Conservatives should make English the official language of the state.

Illegal immigrants have broken the law and should be denied welfare benefits, drivers’ licenses, in-state tuition to community colleges and universities, and other state benefits paid by taxpayers.

Well, isn't this the timely issue?

To completely understand this issue, one has to understand how the state of North Carolina works. North Carolina is an absolute haven for illegal immigrants -- literally. Many, many bus trips are taken from other states with NC as a destination -- NC gives a driver's license to anyone who wants one, no matter if you're a citizen or not.

AND, thanks to the moronic "motor voter act," all those non-citizens who are getting free NC driver's licenses are also being registered to vote. So anyone who supports changing those rules risks the wrath of criminal aliens who may or may not be illegally voting.

So this agenda item is asking something rather simple -- to those who are breaking the law and entering the country illegally as non-citizens, we don't want you to have a driver's license nor be able to vote in North Carolina. Unfortunately, governor Easley and the Democrats are STRONGLY against that idea -- they like the votes from the criminal aliens.

Indeed, this is an area where the state does have a great deal of power. A HUGE amount of money is spent on illegals -- not arresting them, but supporting them in the form of welfare benefits, section 8 housing, medicaid giveaways, food stamps, aid for dependent children, english as a second language, and on and on and on. If the state made the simple statement that taxpayer money was to be used on legal citizens, the budget could be nearly cut in half.

But, of course, that's anethma to Democrats. Democrats in North Carolina want to increase government and increase spending any possible way they can. By claiming to be "helping" immigrants, they get to spend more money and raise more taxes -- so they can have more control and more money to spend, which is what they exist to do.

The last issue in this agenda item is English as a state language. 90% of the legal citizens of North Carolina support this idea. That doesn't mean the Democrat-controlled legislature cares. This idea would NOT require anyone speak any language. It would not stop anyone from speaking any language they wanted to anywhere they want. It would not restrict ANYONE, nor punish anyone from doing ANYTHING.

What it would do is save money. It would simply state that all forms printed by the North Carolina government would be printed in English. It would state that government employees, in the process of doing their own job, would speak English and not be required to speak any other language. That's all.

Who would be opposed to that? You guessed it -- Democrats. It would SAVE money. Democrats running the state legislature have no clue what that even means. And if this were passed in combination with the above, there'd be no reason to speak Spanish because if you were a spanish-speaking illegal immigrant, you couldn't get free cash from the government anyway!

Keep in mind, none of this has anything to do with legal immigration. If you want to LEAVE your country and become a citizen of America, none of this would effect you (other than potentially reducing your taxes). It would not even lower legal immigration -- it would just encourage people who want to be citizens to actually JOIN our society instead of bringing your own to America.

If you don't like the American culture, that's fine -- just don't come here and expect to bring your own culture -- if your culture is so much better, stay in your country and enjoy it! If you want our handouts, you've got to accept our culture, too.

Will any of this pass? I think it's highly doubtful. These are excellent ideas, and ideas that the state can actually do that WILL reduce illegal, criminal invasion of the state (which is VERY, VERY large, 3rd only to CA and AZ). Despite 90% of the citizens of the state wanting English as the official language, I don't give it much of a chance to pass -- because the Democrats feel they know better than the people how to govern.

The only way I see this getting passed is if the Democrats present some sort of useless version: English is the official language, but government still has to print and communicate in Spanish.

The Time Is Now

By Kit Jarrell at Euphoric Reality

For some Americans, the shock of 9/11 was enough to convince them that nothing is sacred anymore. Nothing is secure, needing no maintenance or defense. For others, 9/11 was an "I told you so" moment more than a wake-up call. But for all of us who thought 9/11 served as the epitome of "They did what?", the last few days have shown us that we can still be shocked; we can still be incensed. We--those of us who are here legally and love our country--can, believe it or not, still be united.

Forsyth County Spending

Taking a peek at just one county in North Carolina, one can see how those inside government view citizens -- as cash cows, whose only purpose is to fund the government so they can spend more money.

The County Commissioners are struggling with how much to raise taxes. The article linked here tries to sell the tax increase by claiming that without some tax increase, the sheriff's department and the health department won't have enough money.

That's typical of government. Scream that people will die or be unsafe unless they implement a tax increase. What these people fail to mention is that with ZERO tax increase, the county will have an additional EIGHT AND A HALF MILLION DOLLARS! That's right, $8,500,000.00 NEW MONEY -- but they're arguing that they need more, more more.

The county claims that without a tax increase, the new "downtown health plaza" will "lose" $800,000. Can someone explain to me what business it is of government's to even fund a "health plaza?"

Also included in all possible scenarios, with or without a tax increase is an employee pay raise of 3.4%. Why? Why should government work be so financially rewarding? Because they're competing with private industry -- and that's wrong. Anything private industry can do, government should NOT be competing with them.

But alas, this is the system of government we are saddled with today -- nothing at all like the representative republic that was founded on principles of freedom so many years ago.

Oh, how I yearn for freedom.

Major League Baseball

It's finally here. Tonight the 2006 Major League Baseball Season begins with the World-Champion Chicago White Sox face the Cleveland Indians. It's on TV at 8pm EST, and I'll be watching.

I'm a BIG baseball fan. I grew up in the 70s and 80s in upstate New York -- and I became a lifetime baseball fan watching the likes of Willie Randolph, the incredible Greg Nettles and Bucky Dent on the left side; Lou Pinella and Mr. October, Reggie Jackson; Luis Tiant, Ron Guidry, Tommy John, and the unbelievable Goose Gossage.

I remember Thurman Munson, and when he died. I saw Catfish Hunter pitch in Yankee stadium. I remember Don Mattingly's rookie year and followed him throughout his entire career -- all 14 years with the Yankees.

MLB is a different game today. It used to be that when a team won a World Series, all the players would want to join that team and be part of a winning team. Nowadays, when a team wins the series, all the players want to leave that team for higher salaries. It used to be more about playing the game and winning than about taking steriods to break records.

It's a different game -- but I can watch it and pretend. I can ignore all the players who have nearly obviously taken steroids. I can pretend I don't see the insane salaries being paid when the players bat. For me, baseball is an escape -- and escape back to another time. A time when kids would step outside and throw the plastic whiffleball pretending to be Goose Gossage or Catfish Hunter, while the opposing kid would be Reggie Jackson.

So, MLB, do investigate. No, the steriods investigation will make no difference to me -- when the chief investigator has a primary role in the management of a team. Pay all the money you want to the players. Exploit and bribe the politicians who I refuse to support to give you tax money for your stadiums. Continue raising ticket prices so that I cannot afford to attend.

I'm going to ignore you, as I always do. I'm going to enjoy the game for what it is -- a great GAME where a pitcher faces a batter and tries to throw that ball past him; while the batter does everything he can to hit that little round ball with a round bat.

Tonight you'll find me watching the game with the sound turned way down. I don't care about all the other issues. I just want to see the game.

Play Ball!
