Put this site together back in 2000 and have been patching it ever since. I decided to write my own blog software using PHP, MYSQL, CSS positioning, XML yada yada. I've still got a lot to learn but will be adding new features to the site as I pick up more.
Many have asked me to share the code but its sooo messy that you're probably better off writing your own.

The first episode of Sunrise's new brand new spanking anime Zegapain aired last week and I liked it a lot. I wont give away the story or anything but I will tell you that the animation and BGM was top notch. The character design was good and what makes Zegapain even more interesting are the cute characters ^^;
The mecha design is interesting too where the body and weapons are made up of some sort of barrier/force field type thingy.

I'm lucky enough to watch everything locally but am curious to know exactly where you go to get hold of your anime? How long does it take for the subs to come out? Do you care about subs? Are older anime titles harder to get hold of (Kiddy Grade for example) ?

Well if its finding anime online its not that hard a deal,
but when it comes to fan-subs it means time and money.

i have a T1 connection with supreme bandwith but network
shapers make it hard so i eather use encryption that the
program hase such as Utorrent, or a ssl client to safely get
my information to my pc at fastest possible speed, in one
month i was able to get 800gigs of anime most unlicensed a
few form underground groups, but you cant think all aired
anime is unlicensed now anime is beaing licensed in ameriaca
before it comes out making fan-subing ilegal

For that reason stoped my fan-sub downloding and started
htting the RAW stuff, i figured if fan-subs do becomme 100%
ilegal, RAWS are the best place to be sience

1.it form broadcast TV its not ilegal to record TV sright
form the source (allthogh i dont know about paid channels)

2.the waiting peroid from broadcast to release can be 6
hours to 2 days at most

3.no subs, a better way to force my self to learn japanese

if any one knows more laws about fan-subing i would like to
know more.

oh MANGA runs the same game as anime, you can get it RAW and
translated.

Depends on the mood of the subber, if they feel like it,
they can do it within 8 hrs (atleast that was a record set
by one of the top notch subbing grp AonE)

Anyway for KiddyGrade and other older animes, depending on
either how cheapskate you want to be or how much regards you
have for copyrights law, you will be better off getting DVD
rips with dubs, you can enjoy, laugh at, whatsoever at the
dubbing.

If it's new and running, I'll download a sub. If it's old
and unavailable, I'll download a sub. If it's old and
available for me to buy, I'll either buy or rent.
Eventually, I'd like to stop relying on fansubs, given I
have a lot of beefs with them and it's better simply to just
learn Japanese.

As far as Zegapain goes, the first episode was good.
Reminded me of Evangelion, a lot.

There are a fair number of fansub sites out there, who
usually post bitTorrents of anime with subtitles about a
week after it comes out in Japan.

http://www.animesuki.com

Is a good resource for unlicensed anime.

However, the fansub community does what it wants, so some
good anime goes untranslated.

And -- as you pointed out, if it's not new, it's hard to
find. You'll have to go into the dark depths of IRC
channels to collect anime that's over a year old.

Its really difficult (financially) to obtain legitimate
Anime DVDs here and if you do it normally costs about 30-40$
per DVD. Stores such as Best Buy, Future Shop, London Drugs
etc. all sell them (abiet a limited selection). Anime stores
that are scattered within the Lower Mainland also have anime
but tend to gouge the consumer with high prices. (i.e.
http://www.sakuramedia.com). The occassional sale of old
anime sometimes offsets this.

I remember the time when I purchased one DVD (0083 SDM) for
$40 before I was aware of other means of obtaining them.
However it has gotten even more difficult these days with
certain ISPs employing a smart P2P deep packet filter called
"Ellacoya" that essentially throttles down speeds when using
any peer-to-peer application such as BT, eDonkey, Shareaza,
Limewire etc. At this moment I'm using Shaw's Xtreme-1
package that boasts a theoretical speed of 7.0 mbps with a
1.0 mbps upstream. I have never reached those speeds or half
of those speeds for that matter (although its possible to
score "4XXX" on speakeasy's bandwidth tester"), and its
taken three days to download 7 GB with the computer on 24/7
which is less than when I was with Telus and their Enhanced
ADSL that featured 2.0mbps and a 1.5mbps upstream.

Anime can be found @

http://www.mininova.org
http://www.isohunt.com
http://www.boxtorrents.com

or on IRC or newsgroups.

If its new stuff like Zegapain I get it from fansubs, mostly
animesuki.com because they have unliceansed anime. I rely
100% on the subs because i know like 0 Japanese.
If it is liceansed i just by the dvd's and watch it with the
dubs because im lazy like that.

and to chopper dave macross has just been rereleased in the
US. Vol 2. came out last month. They even put a new dub in
it, they used the same voice actor for Minmay (i think thats
her name) as the japanese dub.

I usually rely on torrent sites, such as
http://www.torentspy.com or http://www.boxtorents.com. For a
popular anime to be subed (such as Naruto) it takes at most
a week, sometimes less. And yes, it is notoriously hard to
find older anime. For instance I have been trying for years
to get my hands on Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, but
to no avail...if they have been dubbed in America as well as
being old its next to impossible to find sadly...

How do I get my anime? Well I either wait till its out in my

within 2 days of them being shipped to Australia.

Must check this one out.

Hmm,

Don't have the time (or patience) to dig stuff off the net
to download/watch.

Our larger electronic and bookstores usually carry a good
selection of USA licensed anime. If a series really looks
compelling, I'll spring for the periodic single volume
releases. However, I usually wait (quite) awhile and
eventually get a "thinpack" of the series I like which is
the whole series on several dvd's at in a single box set.

Pros: Cheaper than buying the single volumes.

Cons: Not all series come out as thinpacks, few
inserts/goodies, and longer waits for a series to be
released.

When all else fails for certain anime/manga titles--I punt
and hit Amazon.com (like for Robot).

For me, I usually rely on http://tokyotosho.com for anything
under the sun, manga, music, anime, foreign subbed anime
etc. For strictly unlicensed anime, animesuki is the place.
Raws, in my experience, usually come out the day after the
showing on tokyotosho, with subs ranging from a few hours
after the raw appears, to a week or two for new shows.
Bakaupdates is also a pretty good place to look for subbed
English anime.

For older stuff, some people usually post batch torrents on
tokyotosho. Boxtorrents, you can get some licensed stuff,
all batched, so its the complete series and sometimes also
with english language. You can even dl licensed manga there,
but it's not exactly LEGAL to dl stuff that have been
licensed in the US.

I'm completely reliant on subs, as I don't speak japanese at
all.

Didn't have a chance to look at the other poll choices since
my eyes immediately went to the top one. ^^ Nice idea, that
force field thingy.

Ooh, questions? Goodie.

Where I get my anime?
Well, unfortunately, all the anime we ever have on TV here
are those english dubbed pieces of shite, edited to death
and completely erased of all traces of japanese culture in
them.

So, I resort to the internet, like any level-minded bloke
faced with such circumstances. ^^

Subs? I completely rely on subs, since I'm in the infant
stages of learning Japanese. =( It usually takes a day or
two after the episode has aired on Japan, but I don't follow
it that much. I just find it whenever I want to.

Older anime is indeed easier to find, but those *really*
ancient classics are near impossible... unless you ask
someone to torrent it to you.

I'll be sure to keep my eye on Zegapain. But one question,
though; where do they get these weird anime names? =D

Mastering the art of Dogeza in Japan is very important and I recommend you that you stick it high up on your priority list if you are planning on coming over. "Dogeza" is when you get down on your knees to apologize - you would use this in situations like where you accidently drop your bosses cat out the window etc.
I heard that dogeza lessons can be a bit on the expensive side so I found the perfect video where you can learn how to do dogeza. Muha.
If you haven't done so, make sure you learn how to eat sushi at the same time too.

Ah, I remember these. Last time it got me to think it was a
real lesson thing but after the comments I had to hit myself
in the head. The reasons I fell for it was:

1. I have absolutely no idea how Japan life lives. Anime
most likely won't show you all of it.

2. I'm a baka.

3. ... I'll find a reason for three later... everything must
have a third reason.

It was kinda hard to laugh about it cause the english
translator was a bit quiet. I'd rather read subtitles if it
was up to me. Anyway, thanks Danny for the Japan 101.

Eva is a top 5 anime all time in my book. I only wish that
more Eva goodies get released in the U.S./North American
market. >_

Something about this show hits everyone close to home. Tell
me you didn't know the couple that was never actually a
couple but did all the fun stuff anyway, tell me you've
never known that cute stuck up girl overcompensating for her
childhood. Or hell, that quiet pretty girl who was really
from an army of souless clones! Yes, EVA hits us all
somewhere, and god love all the toys we get from the show.

Once again, these are some great pictures. Evangelion is a
great series, in my top 5, but I still Patlabor and Big O.
Should be interesting to see how the live-action movie will
be.

That big Eva-01 is just the Perfect Grade model.

On the subject of EVA, it only has that existensial ending
because the Director was going through depression.

Maybe that's why you see the characters smiling more in
artwork now of days... (Hideakki Anno is happier perhaps?)

Cool!
Is that big unit 1 at the back of the cabinet then new Die
cast one? Ive been after a decent figure of it for ages -
the kaiyodo ones are a bit misshapen i think.
Wheres the misato figures! She is my 2nd fave eva character
(after rei) and you cant get anything good or cheap!

personally, I am ridiculously impressed with Evangelion -
it's started such a big following and copycats (the whole
format of the unknown enemey attacking humanity randomly,
people not traditionally warriors having to step up to
battle (children), religeous overtones, organic giant
mechas, etc etc).

I do agree the ending leaves a lot of gaping holes
unanswered but... it doesn't mean the whole serie's
worthless!!

In fact I find that I would like some side-stories or *gasp*
sequel (that would get them crucified by some zealous fans I
bet, but I still think no publicity is bad publicity!)...

But when I suggested that we feature Evangelion in our
magazine, our entire team was in an uproar about the
subject, saying that if we even pronounce Evangelion the
wrong way we'll offend everyone and our magazine would be
boycotted...

TOTALLY ridiculous...

To tell you guys the truth I never really loved Evangelion.
I like it to an extent then it just got weird on me.
Blasphimy you say? No my dear friends, I couldn't say no to
the giant robots but I've recently started to "get" the
episodes, I havent watched them yet and it's pretty sad even
though I've had them for *counts his fingers and toes* for
the past three weeks or so.

So I'm goin back to the episodes to get the better
understanding of it. Plus I miss the robots tearing each
other open and eating their remains.

On another note, I've heard there was a new Evangelion
series coming out here in the states. I was wondering if
that was true cause I saw the pictures for it and I could
believe my eyes when Rei was... smiling? The whole world
must have been coming to an end...

Great anime, but a little weird. Doesn't stop me from liking
it tho. =P Lovin' that Asuka figure. Methinks I should buy
it if I ever find it here. ^^

Yeah, come to think of it, it's been a really long time
since I watched it. Man.

I've heard that Evangelion has the most disconnected ending
for an anime. Everything doesn't fall together and many
questions are left unanswered. I have yet to watch and
observe this so judging from the pictures from Danny and
from the actual mechas in Super Robot Wars MX Portable, I'd
say that its as kick butt as RX-78 Stepping on a whole
platoon of Zeon Soldiers.

Cheers,

(Forgive me, I'm still at school trying to do some stupid
assignment)
