1-Q
What 5.7x28mm commercial sporting ammunition is currently available?

SS195LF (similar to the SS192 but now with a lead-free primer).
SS196 Sporting Round (Hornady 40 gr V-Max™ red polymer tip projectile).

2-Q
What 5.7x28mm Class III ammunition (armor piercing) is currently available to law enforcement and military agencies?
A

Class III ammunition: Basically an armor piercing round per BATF definition based on projectile structure (full metal jacket) and not on projectile performance (speed is not a factor).

SS190 Duty Round
SS191 Tracer Round
SS193 Sub-sonic Round

3-Q
Can individual police officers or civilians legally purchase Class III
ammunition?
A

No. Class III ammunition can only be sold by purchase order to authorized law enforcement and military agencies.

Note: Class III firearms and/or ammunition can be sold only by department purchase order to a law enforcement or military agency, and even then only upon written authorization from BATFE (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives).

4-Q
Is the FN Five-seveN USG® pistol a Class II sporting firearm available commercially?
A

Yes.
BATFE approved the FN Five-seveN USG as a sporting firearm in 2004.

5-Q
Is the FN Five-seveN USG pistol easily concealable? Does it have an effective range of 200 meters or more?
A

The FN Five-seveN is not easily concealable as it is a large frame, service-sized pistol. There is no compact version of the FN Five-seveN pistol.

As with any other similar handgun, the FN Five-seveN’s effective range is generally recognized as being approximately 25 to 50 meters.

6-Q
Why did FNH USA replace the SS192 cartridge with the SS195LF?
A

Since the end of 2004, FNH USA has made the decision not to import any additional SS192 ammunition because it no longer complies with the new U.S. Federal military and law enforcement firing range environmental requirements. To help avoid any confusion FNH USA’s new “green” ammunition has been renamed SS195LF (Lead Free).

7-Q
Does 5.7x28mm commercial ammunition penetrate the soft body armor typically used by U.S. law enforcement agencies?
A

FNH USA has tested the SS195LF, SS196 and SS197 products against NIJ Level IIIA soft body armor, which is today’s benchmark in soft body armor technology. The SS195LF, SS196 and SS197 did not penetrate the Level IIIA soft body armor tested by FN Herstal.

As shown in a December 2004 study by the U.S. National Institute of Justice (NIJ), many Level II and IIA soft body armor are questionable and subject to penetration by a wide variety of Class II commercial sporting ammunition.

8-Q
The FN Five-seveN USG handgun can fire the SS190 Class III cartridge.
What is done to prevent unauthorized use of this restricted ammunition?
A

In the Untied States the purchase, control and use of Class III items are the responsibility of BATFE, Federal, state and local law enforcement agencies and the military. FNH USA strictly adheres to the regulations outlined by BATFE and U.S. Customs on the sale and transfer of all restricted Class III ammunition.
