Emmy Award nominee Janel Moloney reprises her role for the eighth season as Donna Moss in NBC’s Emmy–winning drama “The West Wing.” As Donna, she plays the spirited, quick-witted assistant to the Deputy Chief of Staff, Josh Lyman (played by Bradley Whitford). Moloney has garnered two Emmy nominations for “Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series” in 2002 and 2004 for her role on the drama.
In describing Donna, Moloney said, “If she’s not having a good time, something’s wrong. She enjoys what she does.” And about the chemistry between Donna and Josh? “Donna couldn’t have been created without Josh,” she said. “He brought her out. Brad is hysterically funny and one of the best people I’ve ever met.”
Most recently, Moloney received critical praise for her moving portrayal of Amber Frey in the TV movie, “Amber Frey: Witness for the Prosecution.” The drama focused on Frey’s relationship with convicted murderer Scott Petersen, played by Nathan Anderson.
In 2002, Moloney starred in Showtime's, TV movie “Bang, Bang You’re Dead,” opposite Ed Cavanagh, Ben Foster and Randy Harrison. The film, directed by Guy Ferland, was based on William Mastrosimone’s 1999 one-act play of the same name and explores the inner thoughts of a student who plots to shoot and kill his classmates and parents.
Prior to joining the cast of “The West Wing,” Moloney built an extensive body of work in both film and television. In one role, Moloney received critical praise for starring opposite Chris Meloni (NBC’s “Law & Order: Special Victim’s Unit”) in the independent feature “The Souler Opposite.” She has also worked on films such as Barbet Schroeder’s “Desperate Measures” and “Til There Was You.” On television, she has starred on such series as “ER” and “Sports Night” in addition to working on the TV movies “And Then She Was Gone” and “To Save a Child.”
Moloney attended the “Purchase Acting Conservatory” at the State University of New York as well as the “American Conservatory Theatre” in San Francisco. She also had the opportunity to study with renowned acting coach Roy London.
Moloney also lends her time to various charities including Children’s Action Network, P.S. Arts and Voices in Harmony.
