In 1998, work started on a 3D graphical adventure game of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The player would be Arthur Dent, starting the story in his house then hitching a lift on a Vogon spaceship, as usual, before spinning off into a new adventure melding ideas from the first three Hitchhiker's books with new concepts. Arthur's ultimate aim would be to obtain a towel from a race called the Towelin Monks (groan) with which he could defeat the Krikkit robots. To claim this towel, he would need to pass seven trials of Courage, Strength, Agility, Faith, Intelligence and Skill.

Along the way he would travel to the swamps of Squornshellous Zeta, the planet construction yards of Magrathea and the Argabuthon Halls of Justice, variously helped or hindered by Ford, Zaphod, Trillian, Marvin, Slartibartfast, Vogons, Dentrassi, Mattresses and the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal.

The game was launched at the E3 conference in May 2001, only a couple of weeks after Douglas' death. Work continued until January 2002 when the plug was (very suddenly) pulled by the Swedish multimedia firm financing the project.

However, a significant amount of information and some great images made their way onto the net while the game was in active development. This section of Planet Magrathea is an attempt to collate together all the available pictures and info.

If you have any other images from the game or any information you would like to add, please contact me.

The following pages were useful in compiling this feature. Some of them have larger, clearer versions of some of the images on display here.
