CTIA: Vendors eye AWS spectrum auctions,
WiMAX jockeys
for position
April 10,
2006 -
With the largest auctions of US spectrum for years due
to start in two months, the equipment vendors used the
CTIA show last week to show off their offerings for
these bands to prospective bidders. The FCC is to
auction licenses in the AWS band (90MHz in 1.7GHz to
2.1GHz) this summer and in the 700MHz, former analog
television spectrum, in 2009. While the cellular
equipment makers were pushing implementations of their
key products for AWS, the WiMAX community was also
heavily active at the show, even though neither of the
new bands is an official profile for 802.16.
Should AT&T have to
divest its broadband wireless holdings?
April 10,
2006 -
With the regulatory review of the proposed
AT&T/BellSouth merger looming, one issue is whether the
combined company would be able to hold on to its 2.3GHz
and 2.5GHz spectrum holdings.
Inukshuk boosts Clearwire further,
but how badly does it need WiMAX?
April 3,
2006 - The Clearwire engine
gathers further momentum, with the US start-up’s key
ally, Bell Canada, completing phase one of its network
roll-out in Canada, through its joint venture with
Rogers Wireless. The much anticipated deal between
Clearwire and one or both US satellite broadcasters –
which have been open about their need for a broadband
wireless network – has not yet materialized, but even
without that boost, the Craig McCaw-led company is
creating a network of partners that enable it to punch
above its weight in the telecoms world.
Intel investment shows Brazil is
poised to be major WiMAX nation
April 3,
2006 -
Brazil is one of the most keenly watched growth markets
for wireless technologies, and because its regulatory
situation remains fluid, many platforms are fighting for
the ear of the operators. Some have already indicated
that they may not favour 3G for their next generation
build-out in all markets, opening the door to WiMAX and
other alternatives.
