Since the Argentine invasion, the Islands have been defended by a land, sea and air garrison of sufficient size to deter any repetition of the events that took place in 1982.

The British force is based at Mount Pleasant (35 miles from Stanley), with a major airfield and its own port facility. Local support is provided by the volunteer Falkland Islands Defence Force, with a history stretching back to 1892.

Relations between the civil and military populations are excellent. Islanders recognise and remember with great pride the tremendous resolve and courage of British Forces leading to victory on June 14th 1982.
