About the Artist
"Origin of the Constellation Pleiades"
by William Kurelek
William Kurelek grew up on the Prarries during the hard 1930's.  The son of Ukranian immigrants, he spent his boyhood on a grain farm in Alberta.  Later the family moved to a dairy farm in Manatoba.  William spent more time sketching and drawing than helping about the farm.  As a young man he traveled through Mexico and Europe before suffering an emotional breakdown in England where he was hospitalized.   he found in religion the strength to recover and go on creating.  William Kurelek is now Canada's best known artist.  His work is in the collections of major museums in Canada, the UNited States, and Europe.

About the Artist
Josephine Crumrine

The dog portraits were done in 1941 by Josephine Crumrine, who was a young Alaskan artist.  At the time these were painted, she lived in what was then the Alaska Territories and specialized in painting dogs and animals.  Her medium was pastels and she used four color lithography for her reproductions.  These images are a set of eight used for menus on the Alaska steamship lines.   Each of the Dogs had a colorful history in Alaska.
