TSUNAMI of 20 January 2003
A major earthquake with a surface magnitude of 7.8 occurred at 0843 UTC 20
January 2003
and was located about 200 kilometers east-northeast of Papua New Guinea's
Bougainville Island (10.5S 160.7E).
The earthquake produced a local tsunami
of about 2 meters at the Tawatana Village on Makira Island, near the island of
Guadalcanal and a small, 3.4 centimeter tsunami at was recorded on the water
level gauge at Honiara.
