TSUNAMI of 20 January 2003
A major earthquake with a moment magnitude of 7.4 occurred at 0207 UTC 22
January 2003
and was located near Colima, Mexico (18.8N 103.8W).
According to the ITIC "Tsunami Newsletter"; Volume XXXV, Number1, page 3: The earthquake
"triggered a tsunami that was recorded at Manzanillo-Colima 12 minutes after the
origin time of the earthquake. The first arrival of the tsuunami had a clear
emergent character." They go on to give a maximum height (T-P) of 122
centimeters. The tsunami was also recorded on Mexico tide guages at Lazaro Cardenas-Michoacan
and Zihuatanehno-Guerrero. More information can be found at
