Georges Vantongerloo (1886-1965)

1886 Born 24 November in Antwerp.

1905-09 Studied at Fine Art Academies in Antwerp and Brussels.

1909-14 Exhibited his figurative sculptures in exhibitions in Ghent and Brussels.

1914 Conscripted as a soldier in World War I. He was wounded in a gas attack
and was discharged from the army.

1914-19 Escaped to Holland, lived in Waasennar and Den Haag.

1916 Met Van Doesburg.

1917-22 Co-signatory of the first manifesto of De Stijl art group and contributor to
the journal ‘De Stijl’.

1917 First abstract works.
Married Adriana Woutrina (Tine) Kalis.

1919-27 Lived in Menton, France.

1922 Exposition Internationale de I’Art d’Aujourd’hui, Geneva.

1924 Publication of L’Art et son Avenir, Edition De Sikkel in Antwerp.

1927 Moved to Paris. Correspondence with the Belgian Prime Minister, Mr Jaspar, concerning project for a bridge at I’Escaut, Antwerp.

1929 Graphisches Kabinett, Munich.
