January 31 USA Today: "...Best supporting actor nominee Paul Giamatti is in Toronto rehearsing Shoot 'Em Up, a movie he's working on with Clive Owen. Does he feel vindicated after not getting a nomination for Sideways last year? Not really. " I feel great. I feel always stunned by this stuff," he laughs. "My manager called me this morning, first thing in the a.m., then my agent, then my wife." Giamatti says he's more stunned that Cinderella Man's leading actor Russell Crowe was overlooked this year. "That's a huge shame. It surprised me," says Giamatti. "I thought for sure he would (be nominated). It's a wonderful thing that I got nominated but my performance is kind of meaningless without his. It doesn't make any sense to me, but I don't know how these things work. It's a drag, it's a bummer." He hasn't talked to director Ron Howard yet, but that's due to technical difficulties. "My cellphone died, so now I'm being berated by everybody. I'm recharging my phone," says Giamatti." - Thanks, Mike, Allison Hello Magazine apparently has voting with Russell in it every week! You can vote for him again - Thanks, Petra The NY Times - David Carr in the Carpetbagger: "...The Academy knows a good ambassador when they see one, which may be part of the reason that Terrence Howard made it into the Best Actor category. He may not be a big movie star yet, but his willingness to engage in the awards season absent archness and with a clear enthusiasm for the craft has made everyone’s job easier, including the Bagger’s. And he can rap, too, if “Hustle and Flow” is to be believed. Russell Crowe is nowhere to be seen, which is too bad for the business and not such a good thing for audiences. Tantrums aside, he combines real curb appeal and the kind of acting muscle that rarely comes along. But you can’t really doubt the process. This is the first time since 1981 that the best director and best picture categories contain the same five pictures. The Academy is of a single mind, including the fact that studios might want to try something new, like making better movies." - Thanks, Cindy Dave Poland at MCN: "The big misses of the morning are Walk The Line, which scored only for the actors in the Top 8 and did nicely in techs with Editing, Costume, Sound Editing; Star Wars: Episode III, which will not compete with King Kong for one last crowning EFX Oscar; The Constant Gardener, which managed only Score and Editing in addition to Ms. Weisz and a happy screenplay grab; and of course, Cinderella Man, which added Editing and Make-Up to the World's Most Expensive Supporting Actor Campaign In Oscar History." Yet even respected Aboriginal actors such as Deborah Mailman and David Gulpilil, or the late Bob Maza, do not have high profiles, he argues. "It's holding lots of people back and they are not being fully recognised for their contribution. I don't like saying we need our black Russell Crowes or our black Kylie Minogues or Nicole Kidmans. Last Tuesday Laura mentioned that there was a pub in Newtown where Russell and his band was playing... We all thought that it can't be the real Russell Crowe because it was such a small venue and there must be millions of people who want to see him play live! We were wrong and after some research on the good ol' internet we found out that it was actually him. So Tuesday just gone, we all dolled ourselves up and went to the gig. (Click for picture) To suprise us all, he was actually quite good... and funny as well. Chris bought his CD for $10 after the show and even though i tried, i couldn't get the support act to sign it when we were chatting to him after the show. The last year in which our wits and our senses alike could feed on homegrown products, thanks to such disparate dramas as “Gladiator” and “Wonder Boys,” was 2000; before that, there were delights from Richard Linklater, with “Dazed and Confused” and “Before Sunrise”; from Wes Anderson, with “Rushmore”; from Bryan Singer, with “The Usual Suspects”; and from Curtis Hanson, with “L.A. Confidential.” All of the above were amused, grown-up entertainments made by men who weren’t trying too hard. One hopes that Hanson’s “In Her Shoes,” of last year, was a soft-soled blip, and that order and toughness will be swiftly restored to his work. If 2006 is going to yank American movies out of the rut, we need something pretty fancy from Hanson and his peers. Zoe Carides explained this was many years ago and that she was on stage with Russell Crowe. She added that she was Russell's love interest in the play while the other twin tried to seduce her but to no avail. She jokes by saying : 'Yes ladies I got to kiss Russell Crowe.... And yes he is a good kisser!' She said that the play is a very fine memory and she had a great time back then. The listener told her that the play was so good that she and her husband saw it eleven times. Each time getting very moved by the story and the actors' performances. It was sad to witness because each man's carefully constructed star persona was demolished by one reckless act. Cruise jumped on Oprah's sofa, to demonstrate to one and all that he was a heterosexual in love. And Crowe, bewitched by late-night demons in his New York hotel as his summer movie "Cinderella Man" failed to open, assaulted a hapless hotel employee with a telephone. Neither man will easily recover from the endless repetition of their misdeeds on television, in print and, most ceaselessly, on the Internet. Fortunately, Cruise and Steven Spielberg's "War of the Worlds" survived the onslaught ($234.3 million). "Cinderella Man" and its Oscar hopes did not ($61.6 million). With "Mission: Impossible 3" coming up this summer, Cruise wisely replaced his sister with PR veteran Paul Bloch. Well reviewed] Variety: Venues on the menu (You can read the article free if you watch a brief ad) -- "...As for "Cinderella Man," New York's Madison Square Garden looks nothing like it did in the 1930s, which forced the film's production team to search for a substitute location. Luckily, they found a near-perfect double at the boxing venue in Toronto's long-closed Maple Leaf Gardens. Of all the places Jim Braddock fights in the movie, "it had the largest ring, the cleanest floor cloth, and the rope was covered in velvet for a plush look," says set decorator Gordon Sim. "In other venues, we would wrap the ropes with cotton to give them a rougher, dirtier feel." Maple Leaf also doubled for the massive 72,000-seat outdoor venue of the Madison Square Garden Bowl. Once situated at 45th Street and Northern Boulevard in Queens, the Bowl closed in the late 1930s, served as an Army Postal Concentration Center until 1962 and now hosts a series of car lots. It has great performances from just about everyone -- Russell Crowe as boxer Jim Braddock, Renee Zellweger as his wife, Mae, and Paul Giamatti as his manager, Joe Gould. Alas, Ron Howard's masterpiece was done in by Universal's decision to release it in June, where it was lost amid summer blockbusters. Cinderella story - ANOTHER member of the Australian
cricket camp who rushed over to say G'day to Russell was long-standing physio
Errol Alcott. When Crowe damaged his shoulder training for his boxing role
in Cinderella Man, placing the filming schedule and finances in doubt, he
called on Alcott to work his magic. Alcott chucked in the tour of Sri Lanka
in February, 2004, to work with Crowe for six weeks and get him back in shape
to complete the film. The Alcotts are great fans of Crowe's work, as evidenced
by the fact that their third child is named Maximus after Crowe's Roman general
in Gladiator. - Thanks, Maria
January 6 budsbabe's clarification on the Raewyn story in the "Spaces" report linked below: "From my gig recollection of the audience reaction to Raewyn, I think the problem (to those audience members unfamiliar with the background to Russell's songs) was the irony of the fact that a man who loved and dedicated his life to trees, eventually died by crashing into one. I think that's what folks thought was the punchline of the "joke". That was my take on it anyway, not folks being deliberately obtuse. (Although granted these guys shouldn't have pinched Russell's set-list before the gig was over - not good form.)"
