New Zealand Cemeteries Library

The collection contains bound and microfiche copies of New Zealand cemetery transcriptions which have been produced by members. Most of these records are also available on microfiche from the New Zealand Microfiche section of the Library. A cemetery record contains a transcription of the information from the headstones in the particular cemetery at the time the transcription was made. In some cases the burial records have been combined with the transcriptions making the information invaluable to the genealogist. Cemetery headstones often provide a great deal of family information such as birth as well as death dates, and family relationships.

A cemetery record will usually contain a title page, index of surnames, sketch plan of the cemetery, and a full copy of the headstone inscription. Not all cemeteries have been transcribed yet, so check the current edition of New Zealand Cemetery Records: a List of Holdings for the area of your research. This can be purchased from NZSG Publications Sales, or consulted at branch meetings.

Depending on the size of the transcriptions, up to five may be borrowed at any one time. Some larger transcriptions are expensive to post so limited research will be undertaken by the Cemeteries Librarian on receipt of a clear, concise request. Please make sure that the correct county and name of cemetery are included with all your requests.

All sections of the library are now located at the NZSG Family Research Centre located at 1st floor, 159 Queens Rd, Panmure, Auckland. Information on how to request loans can be found here. The catalogue can be searched online.
