Where It All Began

Data Lounge is a large gay news site which hosts articles and forums focusing on a wide variety of issues. Until recently, the bulk of the DomLijah discussion took place at Data Lounge, and most of the more bizarre rumors and distortions of fact originated there. It is important to note, however, that the DomLijah True Believers are not representative of Data Lounge as a whole. DL regulars were in fact so unhappy with the never-ending and increasingly more bizarre DomLijah discussions that they were sequestered to the Prancing Pony section of the site (which was not linked anywhere from DL's main pages). As one DL regular phrased it: "Please, PLEASE, don't call these people DL'ers. They're not... They're just ... obsessive fans who took an unwilling forum hostage" (entire post here).

At the end of April 2003, the DL Powers That Be banned the forum altogether, citing the extended flame wars and excessive "troll baiting." Within a few hours a thread about the banning was started on the main forum, replete with typical True Believer paranoia - posts blaming the PR contingent, Sean Astin and homophobic fangirls popped up almost immediately. A few posters claimed that DL had long been angling for a payoff to shut down the threads, and New Line/WB had finally acquiesced as the content was getting too dangerous. This was interspersed with comments from other DL regulars along the lines of It's about time and Oh, god, does this mean the crazies are going to start trolling in the main thread now?

MsAllegro, one of the chief True Believers, responded to the banning by creating a new forum on ezboard, Data Lounge Refugees, to house the former DL-PP threads. While it remains to be seen how this move will change the tone of the discussion, it stands to reason that voices of dissent will be completely silenced. It is a longstanding DL/PP tradition to brand as a troll anyone who doubts the absolute truth of anything the True Believers have decided is a fact, and this practice will no doubt continue at DLR. While the forum still allows anonymous posting, as moderator MsA now has the ability to track IP addresses and ban anyone who dares to doubt the True Believer gospel.

The Reality Check section of Sanity Please refers repeatedly to Data Lounge-Prancing Pony/Data Lounge Refugees (DL-PP/DLR). Most of the claims referenced on this site occurred on DL-PP, but since all activity has relocated to DLR and many of the faithful have already put in appearances, there's little reason to doubt that the same behavior will continue, minus the voices of reason who occasionally popped up at DL/PP. Only time, however, will tell.

Who We Are

Sanity Please was created by group of fans who got tired of the campaign of deliberate misinformation and deceit perpetrated by certain elements of the Lord of the Rings fandom, and decided to inject reason, objectivity and facts into the debate. We don't know Elijah Wood, Dominic Monaghan, or any of the other principal LotR actors, and we make no claim to any special knowledge of their private lives or anything beyond the personas they present publicly. We don't know if they're gay or straight, we don't who they are or are not dating, and we don't care. We don't know what any of them are thinking or feeling, what they want, what they hope for, and we do not delude ourselves that we do.

Why We're Doing This

This website is simply an attempt to provide an easily accessible collection of what is regularly presented as fact by the True Believers and what the true facts actually are, along with some other writings, articles, and resources on the subject. Once again, we don't know if Dom and Elijah are gay, or a couple. And we don't care. The point of this website is not to disprove either claim, or say that no sane person could legitimately come to those conclusions. We just want to provide a more accurate counterpoint to the lies, heavily edited accounts, and wild speculation being foisted upon fans as "fact."

Who We Aren't

We are not teenyboppers who refuse to accept that Elijah and Dom are gay because we want them for ourselves. We are not homophobes who think they can't be gay because gay people are evil. We are not "shippers" of another pairing involving other LotR actors who can't stand the thought of Dom and Elijah being together because it ruins our fantasies. We are not DL-PP/DLR trolls. We are not members of the PR contingent attempting to use this site to hide the truth of Dom and Elijah's Big Gay Love.

The people who created and assisted with this website are a diverse group. We range in age, sexual orientation, profession, race, ethnicity, education and religious affiliation (or lack thereof). Some of us are active in LotR fandom; some of us are not. Some of us write slash; some of us do not. Some of us are regular DL-PP/DLR lurkers; some of us are not. We have no agenda beyond presenting the facts and not the misrepresentations being preached as gospel around fandom, and letting people make decisions for themselves based the whole truth, and not an selectively edited version.
