|I'm delighted to announce that Talis Prism 2.0 is now available.
Talis Prism 2.0 is the first OPAC upgrade delivered from the Lyra Programme. This Lyra Foundation release marks the start of the transition of the Talis library community to 2 new global standards: MARC 21 and ISBN-13. This upgrade provides essential compliance with ISBN-13 and allows libraries to begin presenting records to users in MARC 21 format.
Talis Prism 2.0 is complemented by Talis Alto 3.0, which supports ISBN-13 and enables MARC 21 records to be created and managed within the LMS, and Talis Base 2.0, which provides a high quality MARC 21 record supply service. For further details of these releases please refer to the Lyra Foundation update at http://www.talis.com/lyra/foundation.shtml and the Talis Alto 3.0 announcement at the Talis Alto Forum.
Benefits of your new version of Talis Prism:
Begin MARC 21 cataloguing at your own pace
This upgrade introduces the display of new MARC 21 records alongside existing records, creating a dual format OPAC which enables bibliographic staff to gradually become familiar with new ways of working.
Freedom to experiment with the new format
Configuration facilities enable individual MARC 21 records, or all records in MARC 21 format, to be suppressed from display within Talis Prism. This control enables cataloguers to experiment with MARC 21 cataloguing, without impacting the quality of the OPAC.
Present diverse resources in their native script
As well as benefiting generally from the richness of MARC 21 records, Unicode compliance means that Talis Prism will also display any non-Latin script, giving the catalogue a greater multicultural and scholarly reach. Complementary Unicode support in Talis Alto 3.0 means that cataloguers can input extended characters sets (for non-Latin scripts) within bibliographic records.
Make new ISBN13 stock available to users
Changes to searching within Talis Prism enables stock with the new 13 digit ISBN to be accurately retrieved by users, ensuring the full catalogue is available to search.
Support for bibliographic record conversion
Because Talis Prism 2.0 supports the display of MARC 21 records to users, it is the pre-requisite OPAC for the MARC 21 bibliographic conversion. This upgrade is therefore essential for libraries intending to begin using the Lyra Programme - MARC Conversion Manager to convert the catalogue. To find out more about the MARC Conversion Manager refer to the Lyra Programme update at http://www.talis.com/lyra/foundation.shtml.
