New York City, February 13, 2006: Suzanne Vega of New York City and Paul Mills of Los Angeles were married on February 11th, 2006 at her home in New York City. She is a singer-songwriter, the daughter of Richard Peck of Irvine, California and Patricia Vega of New York City. She is also the step-daughter of the author Edgardo Vega Yunque of New York City. The groom is a sole practitioner civil rights and criminal defense trial lawyer and poet, the son of Goodwin and Rebelle Mills of Marblehead, Massachusetts. The bride is a graduate Cum Laude of Barnard College where she received a Bachelor of Arts in English. The groom is a graduate Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, of the Columbia School of General Studies, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Writing-English and French, winning the Lily Palmer French prize, and of the UCLA School of Law, where he received a Juris Doctor. A reception was held at her home in New York City. The couple will reside in New York City.
Suzanne Vega, best-known for writing and performing the songs “Luka” and “Tom's Diner,” has published the story of her driving instruction in THE NEW YORK TIMES. Paul Mills, formerly a staff writer and contributing editor of FUSION Magazine in Boston, was a well-known Greenwich Village night club and street performer of classic and original poetry under the name Poez in the early 1980's. The couple met at Folk City on West 4th Street in 1981. Mr. Mills proposed to Miss Vega in May, 1983, and she accepted his proposal on Christmas Day, 2005.
The wedding cake was prepared by Ms. Vega's sister Alyson Vega, a Harvard graduate and instructor at the Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School, and the “Tocatina” by Tchaikovsky was performed during the nuptials by Ruby Froom, Suzanne Vega's daughter by a previous marriage. Also present were Mr. Mills' brother, Jed, who performs as the inimitable Pirate Captain Cane, of Marblehead; Lenny Kaye, lead guitar player for Patti Smith; his stylish wife Stephanie Kaye; Jackie Sheeler and Bob Holman, well-known Manhattan poets; and Suzanne's brother Matthew Vega, graduate of Yale University Graduate School of Photography, who took pictures of the event. Also in attendance were Marvin Paige and Brian MacManus.
The wedding ceremony was performed by Mary Beaty, celebrant, who is ordained by the Humanist Society and the American Humanist Association as Humanist Clergy, legally certified to perform weddings in the state of New York; she also represents the AHA at the United Nations. The wedding and engagement rings were made of gold and sapphire by Bruce Rogers of Marblehead, MA. This is the bride's second marriage and the groom's first, the last for both.
