IMDb Movie of the Day Together is writer/director Chen Kaige's story of talented young violinist Xiaochun (Yun Tang) and his father Liu Cheng (Peiqi Liu), who move from their quiet rural town to the bustling metropolis of Beijing. Hoping to augment Xiaochun's prodigious musical talent with the best education they can afford, Liu Cheng is willing to sacrifice everything to insure his son's success -- he's so dedicated that he keeps his life savings under his hat as they move about the city. The pair finally manages to get Xiaochun accepted as a student of the prestigious Professor Yu (Kaige), and the boy is swept up into the demanding, intense world of music study, much to his proud father's satisfaction. While Xiaochun loves playing, he gradually begins to wonder exactly what he wants for himself, questioning whether his father's dreams for him are the path he truly wants to follow. Tang's evocation of the young, brilliantly talented and increasingly dissatisfied Xiaochun is an impressive one, his expressiveness true to both the music and the story at hand. It is Liu's performance, however, that captures the heart, with his thoughtful depiction of a universal parental wish -- to improve the lives of their offspring -- wrought in careful detail.
