Nicolò POLLARI, Lieutenant General of the "Guardia di Finanza" (GdF) (Economic and Financial Police Forces), was born in Caltanissetta on
3rd May, 1943.
He attended the regular courses of the "Guardia di Finanza" Academy from 1962 to 1966; later, in 1967, a course on N.B.C. weapon defense
and, from 1979 to 1981, the Advanced Course of the Excise and Revenue Police.
He was appointed Second Lieutenant in 1964 and, after a regular military career, Colonel in 1988, Brigadier General in 1993, Major General in
1998 and Lieutenant General in 2002.
He was in command of Territorial, Education and Higher Training Units as well as the operational branches of the Excise and Revenue Police
and of the Criminal Police; in particular, from 1991 to 1993, he directed the Central Unit of the Excise and Revenue Police in Rome.
He carried out criminal inquires and investigations to counter terrorism and organized crime in Italy and abroad.
From April 1993 to August 1997 he was the Chief of Staff of the General Headquarters of the "Guardia di Finanza".
From September 1997 to October 2001 he was the Deputy Secretary General of the Executive Committee for the Intelligence and Security
Services. Furthermore, in the same period, he chaired the Inter-Institutional Working Group on Economic and Financial Intelligence.
He was appointed SISMI Director on 15th October, 2001.
He took university degrees in Law, in Business Economics and in Political Sciences and specialized in Administrative Justice at the University
in Bologna. He also got specialization degrees in Economic and Financial Security Sciences and in International and Diplomatic
He is author of a number of publications on legal and economic matters, investigation and intelligence techniques.
He is Professor at "Jean Monnet Action" in Brussels, Tax Law Professor at the Mediterranean University in Reggio Calabria as well as
Professor of legal and economic subjects at various Italian Universities and at the Highest Law Enforcement and Intelligence and Security
Under the ageis of the WEU, he directed international control operations in the Danube area within the framework of the embargo resolution
He worked as Italian representative with the Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigation Division (USA).
In Brussels and Italy, he cooperated with the European Anti-Fraud Office (former UCLAF) as well as with the Budget and Community Transit
Committees of the European Parliament.
He was a member of the Ministerial Commission against Corruption and of various Governmental Investigation Commissions as well as of
the Technical Committee on Tax Reform and Fiscal Federalism.
He has been awarded the highest Italian and foreign decorations and rewards.
He is married and has two daughters.
