Academic highlights: English program emphasizes international literature, uses Writers Workshop in all grades, and culminates with a required senior thesis. Math classes use cooperative-group model throughout middle and upper schools -- in middle school, Connected Math program is used. Technology is integrated into all subjects. Fine-arts faculty are all professional artists and performers. Drama faculty has written and directed original plays and musicals. Mock Trial team second at state competition. Math teams in middle and upper school are district competitors. Middle-school chess team won a major tournament in 2003. Japanese-language students consistently place in top slots at state competitions. Multiyear winners of Emerald City League sportsmanship awards in various sports. Recent state/league champions in soccer, volleyball and basketball. Students take specialized classes and workshops in a variety of areas: fencing, Courtroom as Classroom, Close-Up Washington, D.C., SAT preparation and international travel, for example. Block week about every other week consists of two days of 80-minute class periods.

Improving student achievement: Faculty works with students who have diverse learning styles and abilities.

Special programs: Language Training Program takes a special one-on-one approach for students with specific language disabilities such as dyslexia. Program also focuses on increasing self-esteem and problem-solving skills in academic and social environments.

Special graduation requirements: 8 semesters: English (including satisfactory completion of senior thesis). 7 semesters: history. 6 semesters: PE, math, science (must include 1 course each in biology, physics and chemistry). 3 years of one language or 2 years each of two languages. At least one course each in visual art, music and drama. 60 community-service hours.

Technology used for: Technology integrated schoolwide. Drawing in middle-school art classes for visual-arts projects. Designing bridge-stress analysis in science classes. Studying music with MIDI keyboards. Math classes using stock-market game on the Internet. PageMaker and Photoshop software in yearbook and newspaper classes. PowerPoint presentations in history and English, graphing calculators and Geometer SketchPad in math and Internet research in all disciplines. Classes in Web-site development, java programming, digital video, computer art, 3-D modeling, Girls in Technology. Home access for students, faculty and staff.

Parent/community support: Parents serve on board of trustees, committees and parent council; volunteer in classrooms, with clubs, special projects and daily operations. Through fund raising, parents support financial aid, staff development, capital projects, fine arts and athletics. Parent-education committee arranges programs on topics of concern to parents.

World languages: Spanish, Japanese, French

Extracurricular: Student newspaper, Student yearbook, Honor society Creative arts society, multicultural student alliance, Key Club, Gay-Straight Alliance, robotics, harassment prevention and education committee, Women in Science, ecology club, Amnesty International, math club.

Safety: Open campus. Dean of upper school student life facilitates conversations with students. Every student has an adviser who serves as an advocate and can assist in mediation.

Student guidance: Students meet weekly in advisory. Advisers call home every semester to discuss student progress. College- and career-advisory staff work with students and families on college admission and financial aid.

The arts: Band, Choir, Drama, Performing dance, Photography, Drawing/painting, Ceramics Classical ensemble, jewelry design, architectural drafting, folk art.

Students served: Students seeking a college-preparatory education within a balanced liberal-arts and sciences program. Admission requirements: Student essay, parent essay, two teacher evaluations, transcripts from last two years of school, Independent School Entrance Exam, interview and $45 application fee.

What's new: New head of school in 2002-03. Hooper Fine Arts Center opened 2002-03, a professional theater that seats 298 and contains a dance studio, drama room, music studios, visual-arts studios and a darkroom. Learning resource coordinator hired 2003 to coordinate programs relating to students with disabilities and differences requiring accommodations. Director of intercultural affairs hired 2003 to sustain and enhance current diversity initiatives as well as develop intercultural and international opportunities.
