Burundi freezes recognition of so-called Sahrawi republic

Addis Ababa, May 10 - The Burundi government has frozen its recognition of the so-called Sahrawi republic (SADR), according to information circulated in Addis Ababa, hosting the headquarters of the African Union (AU).

     In a verbal note addressed to the African Commission, to the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry and to diplomatic and consular missions in the Ethiopian capital city, Burundi authorities have made public their decision to freeze recognition to SADR as of Friday, May 5.

     The South-East African country recognized on March 1st, 1976, SADR, that was proclaimed by the Algeria-backed "Polisario" in the mid-seventies to shore up its claim of separating the Moroccan southern provinces, known as the Sahara, from the motherland.
