The numbers game
THE few changes there are in Singapore's newest electoral map have affected as much as 175,000 Singaporeans, or about 8 per cent of the voting population.
.
The biggest change in the numbers game is in East Coast GRC, where there are now 31,824 less voters, after parts of Bedok New Town, Bedok North Green, Chai Chee Gardens and Kampong Chai Chee are given up to Marine Parade GRC.
.
The latter has a surplus of 12,240 voters compared to the last GE, having also absorbed the area bounded by the Pan-Island Expressway, Jalan Eunos and Sims Avenue East from Aljunied GRC.
.
More than 55,000 voters will find themselves practically guaranteed a chance to vote in the next GE, with the creation of two new Single Member Constituencies of Bukit Panjang and Yio Chu Kang.
.
That is slightly more than the 43,459 others from Ayer Rajah and Bukit Timah combined who will have to wait and see if the Opposition comes-a-knocking in their new GRCs: West Coast and Holland-Bukit Timah respectively.
.
For all the changes, all eyes are likely to be on Aljunied GRC, now flush with 19,584 more electors – taken from Marine Parade GRC for this GE.
.
"(The electoral change) makes me excited because, for so many years, I've not voted," said Mr Patrick Phoon, 59, of Serangoon Gardens, which now comes under Aljunied GRC. "Being in Aljunied is a bit better (than in Marine Parade)."
