update on theNPA

May 11, 2006 on 1:40 am | In Uncategorized, theNPA | No Comments

All right, the first issue wasn’t released as planned. We’re thinking of changing the name, adding more content, and whatnot.

If you have any ideas on what it should be, then email it to fallen@.remove-spambait-remove.the-npa.org

We’ve also set up a PBX, with conferencing, ANAC readback, BCR archives, and more. If you’d like to see another great radio show be hosted on the PBX, just email me at the above posted address.

The number to that is 1(360)215.5259. If you want people to get on the conference, stop by the IRC channel ( server; irc.telephreak.org channel; #thenpa ) and force someone to get on. It’s fun, it’s free - depending on the time / your plan - so why not?

We’d also like ideas for articles, shows, anything. If you have something to say, I want to hear it. Again, send that to the above posted email.
Need hosting? Check out http://sentiensystems.com for a great reliable VPS provider.

No, i’m not just doing this because they host me, i’m doing it because they are the best host i’ve ever had my stuff hosted on. Plus, you mention fallen when you sign up, and I get a discount :]

BSDRadius

April 26, 2006 on 3:51 pm | In VoIP | No Comments

BSDRadius is open source RADIUS server targeted for use in Voice over IP (VoIP) applications. While there are quite large number of Radius servers (including free) available in the world, little number of them (if any) are developed with VoIP specific needs in mind. Typical VoIP RADIUS server should be able to take high amount of AAA requests in short time periods, handle large databases, and respond timely to prevent time-outs and request retransmission cases. Most commonly used VoIP protocols (SIP and H.323) use small number of Authentication methods (e.g. CHAP and Digest), and this can allow reduce processing overhead and code size of server.

BlackBerrys, BlueBerrys, and now, RedBerrys?

April 12, 2006 on 2:27 am | In Hardware, Digital Rights, Telecommunications | No Comments

The Chinese telecom, “China Unicom Ltd.”, has released it’s new gadget, the RedBerry. RIM’s BlackBerry, which was delayed at least 2 years about being released into mainland China, is now going to be challenged by the RedBerry’s new service. China has not dispelled rumors that the name is in direct imitation of the BlackBerry, they’ve infact supported it. They say it represents the name people already know, and the color of China Unicom’s new symbol.

The RedBerry even uses the same “push-mail” technology as the BlackBerry. The difference is, the RedBerry does not use the handset, it uses CDMA technology. RedBerry is standing tough, and are going to directly challenge BlackBerry’s would-be monopoly on the push-mail technology. A BlackBerry email account cost 64$ a month in Hong Kong, while a RedBerry account cost’s 1$ for 5 MB, and a few cents for each message.

VoIP Cell Phones Coming SOON!

April 10, 2006 on 3:18 pm | In VoIP, Hardware, Telecommunications | No Comments

Cell phones with WiFi capability were introduced at this years CTIA Wireless 2006 conference. These new models fall back on WiFi hotspots when your cell phone’s signal is weak, or whenever there is one in range, like at home, or work. The coolest thing, there’s no dropped conversation or quality when the switching takes place. There are alot of companies already jumping on the bandwagon, including Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Cingular (now a product of AT&T and BellSouth), and more. Cingular does have some issues though, as they think this could hurt their landline business.

This new UMA, Unlicensed Mobile Access, technology will provide tons of new leaps in what can be accomplished with a wireless router, but also it could provide some downfalls. What if someone wardriving, and packet sniffing all the packets, was able to pick up your conversations? Would there be any notification of that? Would there be any encryption of the packets? I think there’s all some more information we’d like to see and security issues dealt with, as I don’t think i’m the only one who sees impending doom on the horizon.
