POLICE have identified the body retrieved from the Beaconsfield gold mine this evening.

Inspector Paul Reynolds said tonight the body had been identified as Larry Paul Knight, 44, of Launceston.

"Obviously our thoughts go out to the Knight family at this time and their friends as they do to the families and friends of the remaining missing miners," he said.

Inspector Reynolds said the family of the deceased miner had been notified.

"Obviously they were devastated," he said.

Inspector Reynolds said the rescue mission for the two remaining miners, who have been trapped since Tuesday night, remains ongoing.

Trapped one kilometre underground are Beaconsfield man Todd Russell, a footballer and father of three in his 30s and Brant (Brant) Webb, 37, from nearby Beauty Point.

The three miners were trapped by rock falls at the mine in northern Tasmania.

The rock falls were sparked by seismic events geophysicists suspect were caused by the mine operation itself.

Mr Knight's body was retrieved shortly after 8pm tonight and has been transported to the coroner.
