On this week's Classic Album Show we feature a record by a UK band that is credited with starting the whole progressive rock movement! The band is King Crimson, and the album is their 1969 debut release "In the Court of the Crimson King".
Described as a thinking man's Pink Floyd, King Crimson created their debut record to be experienced on an intellectual level, rather than as just a rhythmic listening experience. "In the Court of the Crimson King" dips into elements of free-form jazz, classical music, and pure grungy rock.
There are only five songs on the album, kicking-off with the jazzy tones of "21st Century Schizoid Man". This is followed by the dreamy balled "I Talk to the Wind", which is laced with delicate vocal harmonies. The love song "Moonchild" meanders through a range of musical styles, and at twelve minutes long, often seems to disappear altogether!
"In the Court of the Crimson King" is often billed as a "love it, or hate it" record. You can decide for yourself, because this Sunday night, Annie Gaffney will play the entire album for you on ABC Coast FM's Classic Album Show. That's right after the news at nine, Queensland time.
