Cutting through the hill to Orchard
A more direct route from Marina Centre to the Orchard area
Lin Yanqin
COME year-end, you could drive right through the heart of Fort Canning Hill to get to the Orchard area.
With the new Fort Canning Tunnel, motorists will be able to enter near where the former National Library used to stand, travel through a 350m-long, three-lane tunnel that cuts right into Fort Canning Hill, and exit at Penang Road, just before Park Mall.
The existing Canning Rise will continue to run over it, providing access to the park.
Meanwhile, Stamford Road as you know it will be redirected, cutting through the Singapore Management University towards Prinsep Street — all part of the redevelopment plan for the Bras Basah area.
Costing nearly $34 million, the tunnel aims to create a more direct flow of traffic from Marina Centre towards the Orchard area, while the realignment of Stamford Road would create a more direct path towards Bras Basah.
