Email Annie

Annie is seven years old now. We made the Annie image on September 11th. She was too young to know what was happening. She would love to get an email at her new email address. She hasn't seen the pictures of herself on the Web so you might include one or tell her a little bit about where you live. Annie lives in California.

At Sugar-n-Spicy we found our original Annie. Thanks for keeping her safe Illana.

It would be a nice surprise for Annie to get an email from you. Email Annie and tell her where you are from. If you've ever posted her picture or wondered who that little girl was let her know. Thanks all.

UPDATE: TACK-O-RAMA IS GROWING

Tack-O-Rama Clip Art

We can all use 100% Free Clip Art and the selection at Tack-o-Rama is expanding. We copied this image and gave it a transparent background so that the glow filter could be applied.

Add style="filter:glow(color=maroon)" to the IMG tag to make the edges glow.

Copy and paste (or type) this in your Blog or Web page.

It will look like this.

The glow filter can be applied to transparent images or text. The Color Chart has more named colors. You can change the color maroon to any color in the chart. We are using the color names chocolate, salmon, orange, and powderblue.

Site Stats
We turned the site statistics on even though it's not always a pretty picture. Some of the popular pages at Mandarin are not pages that we want to be popular. They had a purpose at one time and still do for some but that's not easy to measure. Did the search engine point the visitor to the right place?

BEFORE ANYONE DID ANYTHING,
ELVIS
DID EVERYTHING

Who's On?
That is the dilemma. We can watch what pages folks are visiting in real time. So, do we spiff up (spellchecker said "spoof up") those old pages or just let them be. Sitemeter lets you click on Who's On? and right now it looks something like this.

2002_12_01_archive.html
2002_12_01_archive.html
banner.html
mandarin-tools.html
gator.html
fadejs.html
blogger.html
2003_04_01_archive.html
daniel1.html

Entry Pages
If you use sitemeter you might not want to pay a lot of attention to the Entry Pages rankings. We had our meter turned on for only a couple of pages and there is no way it could have recalculated the rankings but it did. It appears to use old numbers.

Visits
If you track the number of unique visitors and don't like the counts then you might be pleasantly surprised to learn that it doesn't count all of your unique visitors. It simply doesn't load for every single visit.

Why that page?
Why do so many visitors land at 2002_12_01_archive.html? Sitemeter helps us there. They are searching for Elvis

Why?
Because...

BEFORE ANYONE DID ANYTHING,
ELVIS
DID EVERYTHING

div Bordersspan Colors
The Elvis centered box with a border is made with the DIV while the color change inside the bordered box is done with the SPAN. Copy and paste (or type) this code in your Blog or Web page.

It will look like this.

This code works best when you listen to Elvis. We know that you never click the listen to Elvis but if you do this page will make a lot more sense. Listen to the words...

Image Alignment
Align Left and Align Right Combined

Align Right
Align Left

We've been blogging around Top 100 territory and found some good Blogs, but none were better than our regular reads. So here we sit with these coke bottles and thought it might be interesting to recycle them (again). We hardly ever align to the left and to the right at the same time. Let's try it. Here, have a Coke and try it at your place too.

The Coke Code

The Coke code looks like this.

Copy and paste from here (images will insert automatically).

It will look something like this.

Government Workers

Rob shares the chair

Some of you think we get paid too much, others think we waste time and tax dollars. Government IT professionals in our organization are generally well-trained and work long hours. We are taxpayers too and we do our best to work efficiently.

Should taxpayers have to pay for a safe workplace?
I don't know the answer. But, I'm on my own clock right now having left work in more pain than is tolerable and need to speak up. Quite some time ago a defective cabinet (low bidder) fell and took me down with it. No, I didn't file a Worker's Compensation claim. That bureaucracy isn't worth pursuing if one can avoid it. I had hoped for spinal surgery but the spine is too damaged.

Walking
I use a cane or a wheelchair, and some days no assistive device. Lately I've been able to walk in on my own but the wheelchair is always in the trunk. Today I had to write this email to our Risk Assessment Coordinator.

Raging Inferno

Dear dude,

This is to confirm that I will not comply with the CHP suggestion that I remain in the building at the top of the stairs in the event that there is a fire that is not a "raging inferno".

A fire can become a raging inferno within minutes. I will roll down the stairs or scoot one stair at a time. The suggestion that anyone stay in a burning building without attempting to exit doesn't make sense.

Regards,
me

Evac Chair
I will purchase my own evac chair and will then go through the process of being denied bringing in special equipment. All requests are denied. Eventually.

Deaf Coworkers
Efforts to get a fire strobe light installed for the deaf failed. So, there are three of us who hunt for our friend when the fire-alarm sounds so that he is not left alone in the building again.

Placard Parking
We never got the extra Handicap parking spaces promised with the "all it takes is some blue spray paint". That was nearly a year ago. This month we are pooling our resources to purchase enough raffle tickets to win the front parking spot reserved for the Employee Association Raffle winner. If we win the parking spot we will share it as needed.

Accessibility is Boring!
Folks don't want to deal with accessibility issues. It makes their job difficult. Employers don't want to deal with Americans with Disablities Act (ADA) requirements, including Governmental agencies. Even our own Accessibility is Boring! article regarding building accessible Web sites is not complete. I guess it's hard to please everyone.

Especially us.

FLIPPING ORKUTFLIPPING ORKUT

At least when right-wingers rant, there's a point... read more at Paul Katcher.com

It's spreading. Bryk rattled the cage and the bear responded. Why do people have to have opinions? Can't we all just think the same. When Blog world gets crazy we go to the other side where it is always usually safe.

If you came here for the Vertical Flip, here it is. Copy and paste (or type) this in your Blog or Web page.

It might look like this.

FLIPPING ORKUTFLIPPING ORKUT

To Flip ORKUT we used the H3 heading tag. It goes like this.

It will look something like this.

FLIPPING ORKUTFLIPPING ORKUT

image flipped vertically

Gary flipped the pineapple-upside-down cake that Diane couldn't flip.

The instructions above with the width:50;height:50;filter:flipv(): are defining the size of the image to be flipped. Our image is a square that is 50 pixels wide and 50 pixels high.

Right-click on the image then click the properties. The properties tell you that this image is 50 x 50 pixels. Change the width and height to match your image size (and we'll leave the cooking to Gary).

When the going gets tough...

Copy and paste (or type) this in your Blog or Web page.

It will look like this.

YOUR TEXT GOES HERE. Just keep typing after the image code is inserted. The text will automatically wrap around the image. Change the image name A9.gif to any image name in the Square Gallery. No link, no strings, just a bunch of free squares.

What does that code do?

1. Inserts an image named a9.gif
2. Aligns the image to the left.
3. Makes your text wrap around the image.
4. Puts space between the text and the image.

The vertical space vspace is 0. The horizontal space hspace is 10. The horizontal space keeps the text from bumping up next to the image.

Blogger and other tools sometimes insert a line break <br> that you can't see. The code should be on one line. Use the delete key to get rid of any stray line breaks.

Colorizing Black and White Photographs

Colorizing Images In Adobe

"I am by no means a Photoshop wizard! I learned to do things by trial and error, so here's my version of colorization"

This tutorial contributed by Lynn Rockwell continues to be the most popular article here at Mandarin and the folks who use it find the technique works in graphic tools other than Adobe. If you have used Lynn's tutorial we would like to see your results.

Watch NASA TV now!

In the comments one post down Gary tells Punkclown
I'm watching NASA, they were talking about rover positions on Mars -- turns out Opportunity is about 2 degrees south of the Equator!

Gary has good links like the Cornell Gallery but we want to know what he is looking at right now. Today. Until he checks in we'll search for the good stuff.

Rover Wallpaper (includes dual monitor size background wallpaper)

Press Release Images

Are you sure you want to go to Mars? from NASA is too funny to resist linking.

NASA's Mars Exploration Program

Right-click to look at NASA's HTML code. What does it take to be a Web Developer at NASA? The pages look just fine. It works. It's all done with tables, the forbidden layout of the Code Gods.

NASA TV I think we're getting closer.

Men are from Mars...
Watch NASA TV now!

Watch NASA TV now! This is NASA TV via the Internet. NASA TV provides real time coverage of Agency activities and missions as well as resource video. We're watching and listening to the live feed now. It seems to switch from a live feed to pre-recorded messages in between. Right now it's just a bunch of people talking in the background seemingly unaware that we are all listening.
