From the fiery depths of ancient craters a volcanic eruption created huge flows of molten rock known as lava foam. This lava, while cooling, became very porous due to escaping gases. From this rare, natural volcanic occurrence block pumice was born. Rugged in appearance, enduring in character, it is very light in weight compared to other rock. At our mill block pumice boulders are sawed and shaped into many useful products which serve the public, professional and industrial communities.

As new as the breaking surf at the beach, as timeless as the mountain range from which they come, our unique products are a combined gift of nature and the ingenuity of man. As a mining people, we of the United States Pumice Company are dedicated to your needs while preserving our natural heritage - the scenic wonder and wildlife of the American wilderness. From a modest beginning in 1941 our company has grown to become an international marketer of block pumice, an industrial mineral we mine in Mono County, California. This is High Sierra country overlooking Mono Lake, not far from the recreational ski runs of Mammoth Mountain. Many of our employees live in, or near Lee Vining, a service town close to our mill. Company administrative offices are located within the City of Los Angeles, California.
