M.Sc. in History and Philosophy of Science
The Master's Programme in the History and Philosophy of Science at
Utrecht University offers qualified students the opportunity to pursue
an intensive course of study in the historical and philosophical
dimensions of science. The programme is supported by the Utrecht
Institute for the History and Foundations of Mathematics and Science,
which is a leading centre in Europe. The Master's programme also
involves major contributions from the Department of Philosophy, in
particular on the History of Philosophy, Logic and Foundations of
mathematics, and General Philosophy of Science.
The Master's programme aims at training talented and motivated
students to become sophisticated researchers in the History and/or the
Philosophy of Science. We encourage applicants with bachelor degrees in
Science as well as the Humanities and Social Sciences.
Graduates from the Master's in History and Philosophy of Science from
Utrecht University are extremely well prepared to enter into PhD
programmes in the Netherlands and elsewhere. A PhD position in the
Netherlands is typically fully funded for a duration of 4 years. Several
graduates have also entered PhD programmes outside of History and
Philosophy of Science, or have started a career in industry or commerce.
