  • Bahrain's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority has ordered Batelco to stop pre-registering customers for its advertised inet broadband BD10 package, according to Gulf Daily News. The telco has been given 10 days to refund payments and deposits to customers who registered for the package, which the TRA says it had not approved.

  • Fake eBay site investigated

  • eBay will investigate what it says is not a legitimate eBay website that has been set up with a UAE domain (ae). AME Info alerted eBay about the site which uses a similar look and feel to the original eBay service. The URL of the fake website is at www.ebay.ae. eBay is a worldwide online market place that facilitates trade in millions of items daily.

  • QTel in running for GSM licence

  • A consortium led by Qatar Telecom has qualified for the find round of selections for Egypt's third GSM licence, according to The Peninsula. The Nessma consortium also includes Singapore's ST Telemedia and Cairo-based Naeem Holdings. A final auction will take place on 4 August 2006.

  • Alwaleed donates computers

  • Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, chairman of Kingdom Holding Company, has donated 5,000 personal computers to the Computer Philanthropic Programme in Tunisia in response to a request from the Tunisian president, reported Arab News. The programme is aimed at developing IT skills in the country.

  • Microsoft warns of critical flaws

  • Microsoft Corp has warned of eight 'critical' security flaws in its Windows operating system and Office software that could allow attackers to take control of a computer, according to Reuters. Microsoft issued patches to fix the problems as part of its monthly security bulletin. It was the biggest such update since February 2005.

  • UAE-based beauty retailer Paris Gallery has introduced Avaya IP Telephony solutions across its showrooms. The system is designed to improve employee productivity. It was put in place by Avaya's partner EMW.

  • Qatar, Bahrain lead telco adaptors

  • Qatar and Bahrain were ranked highest in the Arab world for adopting telecommunication services, according to the Arab Advisors Group. Countries were ranked according to the Total Country Connectivity Measure, which shows the extent of connectivity of individuals in a certain country whether through fixed or GSM lines and/or Internet.
