So long, "Sixth Beatle." (Or is that "Fifth Beatle?")

Billy Preston dies at 59. Here is a link to two good YouTube performances provided by Crooks&Liars.;

(So, was Preston the "Fifth Beatle," or the "Sixth Beatle?" This site claims Jeff Lynne is the "Sixth Beatle," so maybe Billy Preston is the "Fifth Beatle." hmmmmm ...)

Meet Flash.bat!

My buddy Tom, aka Flash.bat, has a debut CD coming out on JIBDOOR Records. Check out the Flash.bat Myspace profile for some samples.

Tom and I got to be good friends working together at Schnuck's. He stocked shelves, usually on an overnight shift while listening to Art Bell on a walkman. If it weren't for Tom, there would be a lot of cool things in this world I wouldn't know about including The Olivia Tremor Control and the awesomeness of toy keytars.

The debut album by Flash.bat is entitled Laud baud.

All-Star buds

Albert Pujols is the highest vote-getter so far in All-Star game balloting. That doesn't come as much of a surprise. Cardinals shortstop David Eckstein currently leads at his position in the National League as well. (This post is really just an excuse to show you this hilarious picture of the two of them. "Gimme five, little David! I'm so proud of you!")

A-Rod's Daily Affirmation

   Boston Globe:
The messages are a combination pep talk, thought management, and a detailed scouting report.

''His attitude has never wavered," writes A-Rod. ''I've never heard him talk in a negative way. Ever. He has been an all-night supermarket of encouragement with his 24/7 accessibility . . . For more than 2,000 times he has said to me the following statement: 'I hit solid with an accelerated bat head.' And I've repeated to myself the same mantra at least 10,000 times over the years."

Law talkin' guy

Well, it's darn near official. I'll be leaving Boston and returning to the great Midwest in early August. I'm going here to learn how to be a law talkin' guy. Though it was only an hour-and-a-half drive from St. Louis, I've spent very little time in Columbia. It's always been a nice time when I did hang out there, though I gather I'll have little time for hanging out during my first year.

I guess I'm going to have to root for the Tigers, too.

C-R-E-E-P

ABC News:
A senior federal law enforcement official tells ABC News the government is tracking the phone numbers we call in an effort to root out confidential sources.

"It's time for you to get some new cell phones, quick," the source told us in an in-person conversation.

ABC News does not know how the government determined who we are calling, or whether our phone records were provided to the government as part of the recently-disclosed NSA collection of domestic phone calls.

Other sources have told us that phone calls and contacts by reporters for ABC News, along with the New York Times and the Washington Post, are being examined as part of a widespread CIA leak investigation.

One former official was asked to sign a document stating he was not a confidential source for New York Times reporter James Risen.

Our reports on the CIA's secret prisons in Romania and Poland were known to have upset CIA officials.
Josh Marshall sums it up in all of its Nixonian glory.
