Like many mid-career actors, Kyra Sedgwick has spent a lot of time strategizing how to get better roles and bigger movies. The usual stuff: Producing her own projects. Writing fan letters to directors. Considering moving from New York—where she lives with her two children and her husband, the actor Kevin Bacon—to some manicured estate in Los Angeles. Finally, however, she has seized on something that she believes will actually work.

"If I got a divorce right now, suddenly I would be hot," she says intensely, leaning over a worn wooden table at a restaurant near her Upper West Side home. "And Kevin would be the bachelor and he would be hot and sexy. It's the truth." Perhaps, but that doesn't mean it's likely to happen—if only because the couple has made a habit of not hewing to what the starmaking industry might recommend.
