Injured Nesta needs more tests Friday 23 June, 2006

Alessandro Nesta will undergo a series of tests on Saturday in a bid to find out whether his World Cup is already over.

The Milan man limped out of the Azzurri’s 2-0 win over the Czech Republic yesterday with a recurrence of the groin strain which has troubled him for some months.

Although Nesta did have a scan this morning, more examinations are required before an accurate diagnosis can be given.

Nesta, who previously picked up strains against Messina in Serie A and in the pre-tournament friendly against the Ukraine, is definitely out of Monday’s last 16 clash versus Australia.

However, there are serious concerns that the stopper could be sidelined for up to 15 days and thus play no further part in Germany 2006.

Nesta was expertly replaced by Marco Materazzi on Thursday as the Inter man even netted the Azzurri’s opening goal.

Boss Marcello Lippi’s only other reserve option for a centre-back berth is Palermo youngster Andrea Barzagli.
