Maharshi Karve "Anna" Efforts of the founder to establish a Women's Education Society, 108 years ago.

The Samstha was established by the renowned educationist and social reformer late Dhondo Keshav Karve at Pune in the year 1896. His contribution to social reforms through women's education, should be seen on the background of social conditions and state of women prevailing over hundred years ago.

At the end of 19th century women in India were not treated properly. They were deprived of many things, including education. Maharshi Karve was of the opinion that, unless women are educated, there would not be any significant change in their condition, as well as of the Nation as whole. Therefore, he started a school for girls in the year 1896 clled as Hingane Stree Shikshan Samstha. In the beginning only one girl was studying in the school. But now, after 100 years, it has become a well known educational Institution exclusively for women and has earned an honourable place in the hearts of the people. This Institution is now known as "Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha"(Maharshi Karve Institution for Women's Education).

Our Samstha's aim is to provide more and more educational facilities to women at large.

Since 1896 samstha is working for the cause of women's upliftment and education. Maharshi Karve established first women's University in Asia which is now known as SNDT.

Samstha started first women's Engineering college in India in the year 1991 Known as “Cummins College of Engineering”. Our Institute Dr. Bhanuben Nanavati College of Architecture was later extalbished in 1994 and Hiraben Nanavati Institute of Management and Research was founded in 1996.

Maharshi Karve was an educationist as well as a social reformer. Besides educating women, he also worked for widow re-marriages and started this work by marrying a widow himself in the year 1893.His wife Baya Karve also helped him in his work. Through out his life he worked for emancipation of women and earned their gratitude. He had a dream of changing women's condition. He devoted himself entirely to fulfill this dream. His persuasive approach, purity of character and uncommon zeal slowly turned his dream into reality. His interest in women's welfare knew no bounds. Widow's home, primary and secondary schools and hostels for girls. slowly an idea of starting a separate university for women took root in his mind and it took shape in the year 1915 at Hingne, Pune. This university received recognition and praise from highest quarters shortly after it's inception and Maharshi Karve was happy to see the progress this university has made in the short span of time.

Dr. Karve was the brain behind establishing a separate women's University, 'Shrimati Nathibai Damodar Thakarsy University' in 1916, popularly known as SNDT University. Administratively this University is now a separate entity, not connected with MKSSS. Recognising the pioneering work done by Maharshi Karve in the field of women's education, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru visited the Samstha and paid glowing tributes to Maharshi Karve and said with humility, "I am just a child". In the year 1958 the highest civilian honour "Bharatratna" was conferred on Dr. Karve by the Government of India at the hands of the then President of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad. The award was a tribute for his untiring efforts in the field of women's education in the most adverse conditions.

On September 4, 1992, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, the President of India specially flew to Pune to unveil the life size statue of Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve at Karve road, a road named after him, leading to Karvenagar, where the main campus of the Samstha is situated. Maharshi Karve died at Pune in 1963 at the age of 104 and was the guiding spirit till his last years to his son Mr. Bhaskar Dhondo Karve alias "Kaka", who had taken over the reins of the Samstha.
