A feature of the picture pages is that each of them (except the Music page — which has single enlargement frames) has a “Slide Show” of the enlarged pictures on that page. You can activate the “Slide Show” by clicking on the first frame (or any other frame) and then using the forward and backward arrows on the screen to move through the pictures.

The Picture Pages of this site make it easy to access the images connected with the main topics. The Wichita Vortex Files is a both a photo gallery of several of the writers of the Wichita Beat scene and a menu to the text files that contain some of their poetry and prose from the 1947 to 1966 period. Click on the photos to go to the text.

Pages have a “return” link to the Home Page; although, you can return as easily in most cases by using the “Back” arrow on your browser tool bar — this saves time as pages then do not have to reload. If you entered the site from some page other than the Home Page, however, you will have to use the return link to the Home Page.

2. Using the Site:

There are a few important rules about how the material in the site may be used:

3. Notes on copyright:

According to the “Fair Use” provision of Chapter 1, Section 107 of the 1976 Copyright Act (as amended, see fn. 38):

Ҥ 107. Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use 38

“Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include —

“(1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;

“(2) the nature of the copyrighted work;

“(3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and

“(4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

“The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors.”

[see Section C: http://www.loc.gov/copyright/circs/circ21.pdf]

In amplifying these standards, the following examples are given of fair use:

“... quotation of excerpts in a review or criticism for purposes of illustration or comment; quotation of short passages in a scholarly or technical work, for illustration or clarification of the author’s observations; use in a parody of some of the content of the work parodied; summary of an address or article, with brief quotations, in a news report; ....”

It is hoped that the researcher using any of the works contained here will observe a regard for copyright considerations by using it in a non-profit, educational manner, and by according proper recognition for the source.

4. If You Were Part of the Wichita Vortex Scene:

If you were part of the Wichita Vortex Scene in the years from 1937 to 1966 and have stories, pictures, or commentary related to that experience and would like to have them included on this site, contact me at the e-mail address above. The text files on this site were prepared using AppleWorks 6 files and Word 5.1a files, which were converted to html files. You may use any of these formats as attachments to e-mails to me. Later versions of Word will save files in the 5.1 format. Pictures should be in jpeg format.
