If you're looking for a mystery, look no further than Square's Final Fantasy X. Final Fantasy X was first privately revealed at the Square Millennium conference in January 2000. It featured real-time 3D environments that took full advantage of the power of the PlayStation 2. Characters were realistically proportioned, like those in Final Fantasy VIII, and you explored from a behind-the-character perspective as in Zelda 64 or Skies of Arcadia. The world design seemed similar to that of Final Fantasy VIII as well, with a mixture of technology and fantasy. The footage included characters named Tida and Yuna, but little is known about the game, and the names and even the characters themselves are subject to change.

Released: March 2001 in Japan (rumored); unknown in the US
Systems: PlayStation 2
The game was originally slated to include online gameplay features and hint-guide integration with Square's PlayOnline service. Such ambitious plans have since been scrapped, and the game will ship without any online component. Rumor places the release at March 2001 in Japan, but such an ambitious release schedule seems unlikely. Square hopes to sell at least 2 million copies of the game worldwide upon the game's release. That's less than Final Fantasy VII, VIII, or IX, but it is still a formidable number given the PlayStation 2's reduced install base.
