RP helpless against missile attack

By Nikko Dizon
Inquirer
Last updated 08:03pm (Mla time) 07/06/2006

THE Philippine military is not capable of intercepting missiles, should they ever be directed at the country, a Philippine Air Force spokesman said.

"Militarily, there's very little we can do," Major Augusto de la Peña told the Inquirer in a phone interview Thursday.

As it is, the Philippines lacks air defense following the retirement of its F-5 fighter jets last year due to the high cost of maintenance.

The Arroyo government has also focused the military's efforts on internal security, fighting communist insurgents and rebel secessionist groups.

For air power, the PAF relies mainly on its Huey choppers, MG-520s, OV-10s, and S-211s, among others.

The Philippines has expressed concern over North Korea's test firing of seven missiles, including a long-range Taepodong, conducted last Wednesday.
